The Dragon Who Couldn't Breathe Fire
![]()
A Book about Being Different
A little dragon worries that he is unlike other dragons, but learns toaccept himself and make the most of his unusual abilities.
Frank, my 7 year old boy, began to learn English almost 5 years ago.
We read this book as a bedtime story together. Ten minutes listening, plus 5 more minutes discussion.
I had many questions, as usual. Frank answered some of the questions. But he was really sleepy yesterday after the Christmas party. So we haven't finished our discussion.
M=me, F=Frank
M: The dragon wants to be able to breathe fire so that he will be like other dragons. Do you want to be like other people?
F: No.
M: Why not?
F: I'm special.
M: You mean, you're special just the way you are?
F: Yes.
M: So you think you're all right to make a mess in the living room?
F: Ho ho ho ho...(laughing).
M: As the little dragon finds himself in the woods at night, what can he do? Does he ask anybody for help?
F: No.
M: Really?
F: No. But the owl gives him some advice.
M: So he takes the wise owl's advice?
F: Yes.
M: What does he do?
F: ...
M: It is late at night. If someone comes to us late at night...
F: Yes. He says "sorry" to the witch.
M: He is polite, isn't he?
F: Yes.
M: When we disturb someone late at night or at an inconvenient time, it's polite to say sorry, just as the little dragon apologizes to the witch for disturbing her.
There are plenty of things we can discuss. About the patience of the little dragon. About not giving up. About being positive. About not running away. - For the next time. |
