I need to have my bicycle fixed. Would you like to go with me?”
Yes. But what's wrong with your bike?”
“The brakes doesn't work very well, and the kid's seat is a little bit wobbly.”
        “I saw that a bolt was gone.”
“The bolts are still there, but two nuts are gone.”

I gave the socks to you a long time ago, but you still haven't put them on yet!”
A long time ago? How long ago?”
Many years ago!”
That's not long ago.”
I gave them to you when dinosaurs were roaming the earth.”
No, you gave them to me before the earth was born.”
No. I gave them to you before the solar system was born.”
我以为骏骏会以“before the Milky Way was born”来反击,谁知他一句话就封住了我的口:“Daddy, you gave them to me before the Big Bang!”
Big Bang was the beginning of time. Nothing can be earlier than that.”

Daddy, do you know what is the Big Bang?”
我尽量搜肠刮肚回忆些东西告诉他:“The Big Bang was the starting of our universe. Before that, everything in our universe was squeezed into a small speck. It was so dense and hot that it suddenly exploded. Bang! Out came the galaxies. Out came the stars. Out came the planets and dust. Everything in our universe came out from that Big Bang.”
The Wheels on the Bus 来。
我见远处开来一辆 Cement Mixer,就把 The train is coming 那首歌改了改:I love cement mixer. You love cememt mixer. Here comes the mixer......

Why should there be so many trees there?”
我告诉他:“Trees are very useful to people. They can provide the oxygen we need. They can stop the flying dust on the road from spreading to people's homes. They can also shade the pedestrians in a sunny hot day.”
See, it will be nice and cool under a tree when the sun scorches the earth.”

Are we there yet? Where does the mechanic work?”
He's right over there!”
Do you know what the mechanic is doing?”
        骏骏答道:“He is fixing the brakes.”
Do you know what this bucket is for?”
我就告诉他:“When a tyre is leaking, the mechanic will squeeze it into water section by section. When he sees bubbles coming from somewhere, he will know where is leaking. Then he will stick a rubber patch there to stop the leaking.”

How does the brakes work?”
When you squeeze the brake, the two rubber pads will press against the wheel. That will slow the bicycle down or stop it.”
        骏骏恍然大悟:“Oh, the friction stops it.”

Daddy, open you mouth wide.”
What's the black thing on your teeth?”
That's the filling for the cavities in my teeth.”
When my tooth had a cavity, the dentist gave me white filling that looked just like my teeth. Why is your filling black?”
The filling for the cavities used to be black. Now dentists don't use it any more. They only use white filling.”
Can the filling be any other colors?”
You can persuade the dentist to dye the filling the color you like.”
If I have three cavities in my teeth, I want to have red filling, yellow filling and green filling.”
That might look strange.”
Then I will have traffic lights in my mouth.”

If I have seven cavities in my teeth, I want to have fillings in seven different colors. Then I will have a rainbow in my mouth!”

教骏骏认识 magnet(2011年3月1日)

What Magnets Can Do

我问骏骏:“Do you like that book? What is it about?”骏骏说:“Yes! It's about magnet.”
我又问:“What is a magnet?”骏骏回答道:“It can stick to things.”
Can it stick to your head?”
Can it stick to the glass on top of the table?”
A magnet can stick to other magnets. Magnets can also stick to the refrigerator door, the tea table leg, the door knob, and the screw on the wall.”
What are those things made of?”
Metal.”
The only metals that can be attracted to magnets are iron, steel, cobalt, and nickel.”
我们又谈了一阵子,谈到磁铁的北极和南极,骏骏说:“When you put the north pole of one magnet near the south pole of another magnet, they will stick together.” 然后又说:“When you put the north pole of one magnet near the north pole of another magnet, they will push each other away.”

        骏骏玩了一会儿之后,我对他说:“I want to draw a picture of a compass now.”

我拿起书正要给骏骏读,他却抢过书去,说:“Daddy, let me read it to you. You answer my question.”

        What is a magnet?
        The first magnetic tools
        Fidge magnets
        Powerful pullers
        Speeding magnets
        Magnets at work电磁铁在工作
        Magnets everywhere
        Magnet power磁力
        Glossary
        Want to know more?
        Index

Police Cars

Officers use the computer to find and store information.”
The computer can tell the police officers how tall the criminals are, what they look like, and what kind of weapons they might have.”
It can also tell the police officers what the criminals have done.”
Yes! It also keeps criminal records.”
骏骏问:“If something is wrong with the radar, what will happen?”我答道:“Then it can't tell how fast a car is moving.” It might think that a moving car is a horse!”

When it's too dark, the police officer can turn on the spotlight to help him search for criminals or help people in trouble.”
骏骏问:“Is a suspect a criminal?”其实书上已经说了:“Suspects are people the police believe have broken a law.” 我对骏骏说:“A suspect might or might not be a criminal. The police officers think that he might have done something wrong. But he is not a criminal yet before the police officers have something to prove that he has broken a law. You can only call him a suspect. Sometimes a suspect turn out to be a real criminal. Sometimes the police officers will find out that the suspect has done nothing wrong.”
Daddy, if a criminal has robbed a bank, how can the police officers dicide who in the town is the criminal?”
The police offcers can check the fingerprints. All the people's fingerprints are different.”
That is right! No two people's fingerprints are the same.”
我问:“Did Bill Nye tell you that?”
I learned it from How and Why.”

The Life Cycle of a Silkworm 示意图。
吃完晚饭是 TV time,我建议骏骏看 Bill Nye the Science Guy 中的 Life Cycle 那一节,以前没看过的,今天看正合适了。

今天晚上的睡前小读,我给了骏骏三本书,问他:“Which book would you like to read first?”
A female silk moth lays about 400 eggs. It takes her about three days to lay her eggs and then she dies.”
读到这里,骏骏好奇地问道:“Why does the female silk moth dies after laying her eggs?”
我定了定神,小心翼翼地解释道:“After laying her eggs, the female silk moth has finished her task. She doesn't need to protect her eggs or keep them warm. She doesn't need to take care of the caterpillars. The eggs will hatch by themselves, and the caterpillars will eat the mulberry leaves that they were laid on. The female silk moth has laid about 400 eggs. Even though some of the eggs or caterpillars will be eaten by birds or lizards, usually there will be enough silkworms left to carry on the life cycle.”
他昨天看了 Bill Nye the Science Guy 中的 Life Cycle 后对我说:“Even though a frog will die sooner or later, her babies will carry on the life cycle.”
骏骏又问:“When does the male silk moth die?”我答道:“The male silk moth dies even earlier, before the female silk moth dies.”我记得后面还会谈到这个问题,就加了一句:“You will find out later.”

They eat mulberry leaves all day and all night.” 昨天睡觉前,骏骏问我:“Do silkworms go to sleep at night?”我为了让他早睡,随口答道:“Of course they do. Any living things need to sleep.” 我有点尴尬地说:“Oh, they even eat all night. Maybe they don't need to sleep.”骏骏似乎没体会到我的尴尬,只是提醒我:“Daddy, before you go to sleep, you should have a look at the container to make sure that the silkworms have enough mulberry leaves to eat.”
(顺便回答 Do silkworms sleep?的问题:Silkworms do not actually sleep like we do, but they do go through periods of rest. When they rest, they don't move much and stop eating. They get a big rest when they go through their last molt before metamorphosis.)

读到第9页,就遇到“雄蚕蛾什么时候死”这个问题的答案:“The male silk moth dies soon after he has mated.”
我快速地理了一下思路,尽量不动声色地说:“The female silk moth alone cannot lay eggs that will hatch into silkworms. She needs something from the male silk moth to fertilize the eggs. They work together to have eggs that can really hatch into silkworms.”
I understand.”
