上次她的作业,外教改了之后,写信说:
I've checked your homework and it was very good! Page 12 didn't need any corrections, so I didn't include it in this email. There were just a few spelling and grammar errors that you need to improve. I enjoyed the riddles that you made, and I think your drawings of the shoes are nice. I think you will become an excellent artist in the future. Anyway, I'll see you tomorrow. Have a wonderful day!
虽说老外大多喜欢用夸张的方式称赞,但现在也有美国人反思这种方式,比如:
I actually cited several of Dweck’s works in my master’s thesis in the sections that addressed this issue. I’m a teacher of gifted students, and I have anecdotal stories as well as research findings with my own students that show how they’ve been crippled by being continuously praised for being smart. It was so vindicating, since I’d been telling my colleagues and parents of students for years to not praise kids for “being smart.” I love the rare occasion when my research validates what I know, rather than making me feel like I did it all wrong!
My husband and I have already started using these principles with our 2-year-old son, although I’m sure he doesn’t really know the difference yet. We’re hoping to avoid some of the painful perfectionism I experienced, as well as the learned avoidance that my husband encountered in school. We’ll have to see how it works out…
I tell my gifted middle schoolers all the time, “No one cares how smart you are. We just don’t. We care how hard you work, how respectful you are of yourself and others, how kind and compassionate you are with your peers, and how coachable you are. No one gets into MIT or Harvard by being too smart to do the work. They get there by working their butts off and never quitting.” They tend to look at me like I have 2 heads, but they’re adolescents, so that’s kind of par-for-the-course. I’m just praying that it sinks in someday!
我比较喜欢这最后一段:
No one cares how smart you are. We just don’t. We care how hard you work, how respectful you are of yourself and others, how kind and compassionate you are with your peers, and how coachable you are. No one gets into MIT or Harvard by being too smart to do the work. They get there by working their butts off and never quitting.
但就我的情况来看,称赞反而是我应该学习的。 |
