Dear YN:

   The weather in our town is very cold! You would freeze. If you park
your car outside for 1 hour, it would be like an ice sculpture!!!!!

   I once went to a place called “雪乡". It was soooooooooo sweet! The
snow is about 20 inches deep! I had ever so much fun there! I bet you never saw that much snow in your whole LIFE!

   And the homework is even worse than yours. We had to write a ten
page report on China history a five page report on fractions, a 800
word diary, and three test papers! I didn’t sleep until 10 o’clock!

   Reply soooooooooooooooon!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s argent!

2010年让我最高兴的一件事：

昨晚我在家回顾了这一年的大事小情，感觉最大的收获是：好运每周去健身中心游泳，身体结实了。
好运的气色好了，长胖了，得病少了。最主要的是，过去，好运经常出鼻血（一个月出血一到两次）。给他做过血常规、凝血因子等检查，排除了血液病。医生说是鼻粘膜不太好，火大。等大一些，会缓解。
我们试过偏方，疗效不是太明显；用过加湿器，也没有效果。后来我听说游泳的孩子身体结实，就赶紧给好运办了一张健身卡。从2009年6月开始，每周好运去游2-4次，假期基本上天天晚上去游泳。这期间，鼻子仍然隔三差五地出血，只不过间隔期延长到40多天。转机出现在2010年9月末。从9月末开始到现在，好运的鼻子一直没有出血 。

Dear YN:
    I also have a deadly enemy. Her name is “XXX”. She is an absolutely PIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You see, I’m new at this school. And when I knew her name, I thought we were going to be good friends! Well I was WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    For the first few days, we didn’t have any problems, but suddenly one day she began to pick on me. We had our first contact at “5. 2”. Then we were constantly getting into combat. Then for some time we were sort of friends, again I thought that we can be “OK”. I was wrong again. When I was sent to the 6th company, she waged war! The first day was “OK”, but then I forgot to bring one of my homework, then she said that the whole company (especially me) was wimps! You see, “XXX” said the first day she won’t write less homework, and I agreed with her, the SCUM!!!!!!!!!!!!
    And she was so disgusting! Her sound was equally disgusting! It sounded like she had something nasty under her nose.
    But I only have this one deadly enemy, so no fear!

YN昨天开始读Number the  Stars的作者Lois Lowry的另一本得金奖的书The Giver。想到亚马逊上推荐适合G6~9，我就说可能较难。但还是愿读。昨晚加今天早上已经读完快一半。间或和我有简短讨论，我看了故事介绍的梗概，知道这是一部谈Utopia的书。看WWT的Lois Lowry传记，看到有美国大约上初中的孩子正在学校研读此书的照片。刚才和妈妈及另一个小朋友去吃自助餐，还要带上书。

YN为何选此本？这是我一二周前和她说过。我指着书的封面说，这本书中文翻译成“记忆传授人”——我说据说被封面上的老头传授了记忆后你的记忆就没有了而变成了新的记忆。YN听说这话为之色变，并说：“那不糟了吗？”就不再说话。看来作者设计的这个构思能深入儿童之心。

YN读时，有几次利用了The Giver (Saddleback Focus on Reading Study Guides)这本书中的Vocabulary Words to Know和Things to Know（见http://www.rayfile.com/files/504 ... -a952-0015c55db73d/），特别是后者。她甚至在读前面几章时就在后面的Things to Know中寻求帮助，比如对Release的解释。她认为书的如下几个部分编的不好，仿佛中国的练习与测试：Focus Your Reading; Building Your Vocabulary; Check Your Understanding。我看到有时Deepen Your Understanding编的还不错。

但刚才看到，书的版权页上写着：RL: 4.5。也就是上过4.5年学的孩子适合。这正和Holes的封底注明一致。

以前在两小千金妈妈的博客看到 GIVER 和 NUMBER THE STARS 都是米国10-12岁学生英语课必读书。

加以讨论方好。图片说明中的词dystopian手机上查不到，金山词霸有，意为“反面乌托邦”，意即历史上的乌托邦是理想国，而此为反理想之国也。我和女儿说图片说明谈到，有反对意见认为此书不适合young children。女儿回答说我不是young children。我说这么认为好。但还是加以讨论方好。
