201. Caillou Plays the Drums
Storyteller:
Caillou liked to play at Clementine's house. She had a big box of funny clothes to play dress up with.
Clementine:
Oh! Look at me. I'm a movie star.
Caillou:
Hello there, movie star lady. Mmm... What was that?
Clementine:
Oh, that's just Billy.
Caillou:
What's he doing?
Clementine:
Come on, I'll show you.
Caillou:
He sure is making a lot of noise.
Clementine:
Billy.
Billy:
Come in.
Caillou:
Oh!
Billy:
Hi, Caillou. How do you like my brand new drums?
Caillou:
Wow!
Billy:
I'm learning how to play the drums so I can be in a rock band.
Caillou:
They dress funny.
Billy:
They dress cool.
Clementine:
I think they dress funny too.
Storyteller:
Caillou really liked Billy's new drums, and drumming sure looked like fun.
Caillou:
Can I try your drums, Billy? Billy!
Clementine:
Billy!
Billy:
Hmm?
Caillou:
Can I try your drums?
Clementine:
Yeah, me too. Can we?
Billy:
Oh... I don't think so.
Clementine:
Why not?
Billy:
They're brand new, and you're too little to play them. You might wreck something.
Clementine:
We're not too little.
Billy:
Well they're my drums and those are my rules. Drums are for grownups, not little kids. Sorry.
Clementine:
It's not fair. We're not so little.
Caillou:
We're not as little as Rosie.
Clementine:
We can do things that grownups do.
Caillou:
Like what?
Clementine:
We have to show Billy that we're not little kids. I know. Come on! Hi, Mommy. We're making a snack for Billy.
Caillou:
And I'm going to get the milk.
Storyteller:
Caillou was very proud that he poured Billy's milk without spilling a single drop.
Clementine's Mommy:
There you go, Caillou.
Clementine:
Can you cut the crusts off, Mommy? Billy likes his sandwiches without them.
Clementine's Mommy:
Hmm-hmm. There you go, Clementine.
Clementine:
Thank you. Let's go, Caillou.
Clementine:
Billy.
Billy:
Come in.
Clementine:
I made you a peanut butter sandwich all by myself. Except Mommy cut the crusts off, but that was my idea.
Caillou:
Here, Billy. I was careful and didn't spill any.
Billy:
You've never brought me a snack before.
Clementine:
That's because we were just little kids before.
Caillou:
Yeah. Now we're grownup.
Billy:
Mmm? Oh, I get it. You wanna play my drums. Sorry, you're still not grownup enough. Thanks for the snack though.
Storyteller:
Caillou wondered how he and Clementine could show Billy they were grownup enough to play his drums. Then he had a wonderful idea.
Billy:
Come in.
Caillou:
Hello, there.
Clementine:
Pleased to meet you.
Caillou:
Those are very nice drums. May I try them? I am a grownup, you know.
Clementine:
What is so funny?
Billy:
All right, all right! You can try them!
Caillou & Clementine:
Yeah!
Billy:
This is called the snare drum. These are toms and these are called cymbals.
Clementine:
You can go first since dressing up was your idea.
Caillou:
Thanks, Clementine.
Billy:
There's a pedal down there. Push it with your foot.
Caillou:
Okay! Wow!
Billy:
That's called the bass drum.
Storyteller:
Caillou really liked how each drum sounded different, but he liked the sound of the cymbal the best.
Clementine:
Way to go, Caillou!
Caillou:
Yeah! Thank you! Thank you! Hello, there. Can I help you?
Mommy:
Hello! Hello, sir. I'm looking for a little boy named Caillou. Have you seen him? Mmm...
Caillou:
Mommy, it's me. I'm a grownup.
Mommy:
Caillou? No, I don't believe it!
Caillou:
Look!
Mommy:
It is you! Well, if you're all grownup, you probably won't wanna play on the swings at the park. That's what I thought we might do this afternoon.
Caillou:
I'm not really a grownup. I'm just pretending.
Mommy:
Oh, good. Take care, Clementine! Bye!
Storyteller:
Caillou liked acting grownup, but he decided that it was time to have fun being a kid again.
202. Caillou's Marching Band
Leo:
Tag! You're it, Emma.
Caillou:
You can't catch me.
Storyteller:
Caillou wondered what that strange noise could be.
Emma:
Tag! You're it.
Caillou:
Tag! You're it.
Leo:
What's that?
Caillou:
I don't know.
Storyteller:
The sound was growing louder and louder. Caillou wanted to find out what it was.
Miss Martin:
A marching band. What a lovely surprise! They're going to be in a parade next week. They must be practicing. Does anyone know what instruments they're playing?
Caillou:
That's a drum.
Miss Martin:
Right!
Leo:
That's a trumpet. And that's a... what is that?
Miss Martin:
That's a tuba. And that's a saxophone.
Storyteller:
Caillou couldn't take his eyes, or ears, off the marching band. The music made him want to march too.
Caillou:
Didn't you like the marching band, Emma?
Emma:
They're too loud.
Caillou:
Marching's not loud. Wanna march with me?
Miss Martin:
Perhaps you could lead everyone in a march back inside, Caillou.
Caillou:
Okay! Follow me!
Miss Martin:
Try counting to four, Caillou. Not too fast. Like this, one two three four, one two three four.
Caillou:
Okay.
Miss Martin:
Everybody else, listen carefully to Caillou when he counts, then step in time to his beat.
Caillou:
One two three four.
Leo:
Marching is fun.
Miss Martin:
Well done, everybody! That's the perfect pace, Caillou.
Miss Martin:
Aren't you going to stop marching?
Kids:
No!
Caillou:
I wish we were a real marching band.
Leo:
Me too.
Miss Martin:
Who else would like to be in a real marching band?
Kids:
I do! Me too!
Miss Martin:
Well, why don't you start your own band?
Kids:
Yeah!
Caillou:
But we don't have any drums or trumpet or snaksophone.
Miss Martin:
Drums, trumpet or saxophone. Well I'm sure if you use your imaginations, there are plenty of things in the playroom that can make music.
Storyteller:
Caillou and his friends searched for things to use as instruments. Things that would make a nice loud noise.
Caillou:
This looks like a good drum. Don't you want an instrument too, Emma?
Storyteller:
Caillou remembered that Emma didn't like loud noises. Maybe she wanted to do something quieter.
Caillou:
I like your star. It looks like the ones on the marching band hats.
Emma:
It does? I could make hats for everyone.
Caillou:
Yeah! You can be our marching band helper.
Miss Martin:
You look like you could use a strap to hold your drum, Caillou.
Caillou:
Thanks, Miss Martin.
Storyteller:
Now Caillou felt like a real marching band drummer.
Miss Martin:
Does everyone like their band hats?
Caillou:
Yeah! Thanks, Emma!
Miss Martin:
Emma just needs to do one thing before you start playing. All right, Caillou, take it away.
Caillou:
Wait! Stop!
Storyteller:
Caillou didn't like the sound the band was making. Maybe slowing things down again would help them sound better.
Caillou:
I'm gonna start like we did before. One two three four.
Miss Martin:
There's a lot more room to march outside, if you'd like.
Mommy:
Oh no, please don't stop. You're marching band sounds wonderful, Caillou.
Caillou:
One two three four!

Miss Martin:
Who wants to help with the clean up today?
Caillou:
I do.
Storyteller:
Caillou liked helping out at snack time.
Miss Martin:
Thank you, Melanie. Thank you, Caillou. Caillou? Where are you?
Caillou:
Here I am!
Miss Martin:
Good job, Caillou. At the end of the day today, we're going to have a talent show. Everyone will be in it. You can make something or perform, just pick anything you want to do.
Emma:
May I draw a picture?
Miss Martin:
Certainly!
Xavier:
I can build a tower.
Miss Martin:
Good!
Storyteller:
Caillou decided he'd like to sing a song for the talent show.
Miss Martin:
Yes, Clementine?
Clementine:
I'm going to sing a song.
Miss Martin:
What about you, Caillou?
Caillou:
I was going to say 'sing a song'.
Miss Martin:
That's all right. You can both sing.
Leo:
May I recite a rhyme, Miss Martin?
Miss Martin:
Of course, Leo.
Leo:
I'm gonna recite a rhyme. I know lots of rhymes.
Caillou:
I'm going to sing "Old Macdonald Had a Farm".
Clementine:
Old Macdonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O!
Miss Martin:
Very good, Clementine.
Storyteller:
Caillou didn't like the way Clementine kept picking the same thing he wanted to do.
Caillou:
Miss Martin, that's the same song I was going to sing.
Miss Martin:
I'm sure we can think of another song you can do. Mm? How about "Ring Around the Rosie"?
Caillou:
Okay.
Clementine:
Old Macdonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O... I forget what comes next.
Caillou:
And on that farm he had some cows...
Clementine:
E-I-E-I-O!
Miss Martin:
Okay everyone, it's time to take a break and go outside.
Leo:
I know the beginnings of lots of rhymes, I, I just don't know any endings.
Caillou:
Ring around the Rosie, a pocket full of posies. Husha husha, we all fall down.
Storyteller:
"Ring around the Rosie" was Caillou's little sister's favourite song. Caillou decided he didn't want to sing it, because it was a song for little little kids.
Clementine:
With a moo-moo here, and a moo-moo... on the farm... Oh, that's not right. And on that farm they had a... um...
Caillou:
A pig! E-I-E-I-O!
Clementine:
Oh, yeah. With an oink oink here and there and there.
Caillou:
No, it goes... With an oink oink here and an oink oink there. Here an oink, there an oink, everywhere an oink oink. You're a good dancer, Clementine.
Clementine:
Thanks, but I wish I could remember all the words to the song.
Caillou:
I know all the words. We could sing it together, if you like.
Clementine:
Okay! Let's practice!
Caillou & Clementine:
Old Madonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O...
Storyteller:
Caillou was glad that they were going to sing the song together.
Leo:
Roses are red, violets are... what are violets?
Clementine:
And on that farm he had some...
Caillou:
Sheep! E-I-E-I-O.
Miss Martin:
Okay kids, let's go in, it's nap time.
Storyteller:
Caillou hoped that he and Clementine would be able to remember all the words to their song. And he hoped that everyone would like it.
Caillou & Clementine:

Caillou:

Miss Martin:

Caillou & Clementine:

Clementine:
I still can't remember what comes next.
Storyteller:
Caillou had an idea that would make it easier to sing their song.
Caillou:
I know what we can do. We can take turns singing. You sing the parts you know and I'll sing the parts I know.
Clementine:
That's a good idea, Caillou.
Storyteller:
Caillou and Clementine practiced their song until it was time for the talent show.
Miss Martin:
All right! Time for the talent show.
Leo:
I couldn't remember any rhymes all the way through, so I made up my own rhyme. Roses are red, I sleep in my bed, and this is my head.
Miss Martin:
That's beautiful, Emma!
Caillou:
Old Macdonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O. And on that farm he had some cows, E-I-E-I-O.
Clementine:
With a Moo-Moo here and a Moo-Moo there, Here a Moo, there a Moo, everywhere a Moo Moo.
Caillou & Clementine:

Miss Martin:
That was great! This is the first time we've had a song and dance team. Thank you, Caillou and Clementine. And thank you, everybody!
Storyteller:
Caillou was glad that he and Clementine had worked together on their song. It was a lot more fun than singing alone. |
