Helping Our Planet
Our planet, the Earth, is very important to us. It provides our needs. But parts of our environment had been polluted. What we need to do is try to keep it clean and healthy.
What can we do to help? You can start by doing small things in your neighborhood. Pick up any litter you see on the ground, and throw them into the garbage can. Also, don’t litter yourself. Don’t pour any dirty water into the rivers, and make sure that nothing dangerous or harmful get into the rivers and lakes. Don’t step on the grass, and plant a few trees each year. Plus, do your best to save energy. Don’t turn on the air conditioner unless it’s too hot or too cold to bear. Turn off the lights in your house while you’re gone. Tell your friends and classmates to do the same. These things are small, but it does help our environment!
You can do bigger things, too, if you could manage it. Do the factories in your town let dirty, oily water flow into the rivers and lakes? Do your neighbors dump their garbage beside their houses? If so, write a letter to your mayor. Tell him or her about these things. I’m sure he or she would stop these things from happening if you do what I said.
Our planet is our home. We need to take care of it. Did you do the things I mentioned to help our planet? Do you have more good ideas? Let’s help our planet together!
Ecosystems
What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem is a community of living things and non-living things in one place. An ecosystem can be large or small.
What are ecosystems around us? Observe with your senses.
For example, a forest is an ecosystem. There are many kinds of animals living there. Each morning, many birds perch on top of trees and chirp. Raccoons scuttle around on the forest floor. Monkeys swing from branch to branch, picking the sweet, ripe fruits growing between the leaves. Hundreds of bugs crawl up the trunks of huge, green trees. Squirrels collect nuts for winter.
Also, there are many plants in a forest. Most of them are trees. Pine trees, fir trees, Hickory trees… They give shelter and food to many animals. Other animals hunt other animals. They are predators. They animals they hunt are called prey. There are many other plants in a forest, too. Wildflowers, grasses, mosses and vines also grow in a forest.
Microbes live in a forest, too. In fact, microbes live everywhere! You just can’t see them with your naked eyes, because they’re too small. Some microbes are harmful, but most of them are not. Microbes are very helpful and important. The microbes in the forest help break down the dead bodies of plants and animals. They become fertilizer for the plants.
Animals, plants and microbes are all part of an ecosystem. They are all connected and rely on each other. Now, try to find and learn about an ecosystem yourself! |
