Traditional school systems also normally begin with and build from age 6, not age 3. If the years up to age 6 are sensitive periods for rapid acquisition of vocabulary, which Dr. Montessori claimed and which is consistent with language research (Carey & Bartlett, 1978; Dollaghan, 1985), age 6 may be too late to have children easily and enthusiastically learn the foundational vocabulary on which much of the additional knowledge is built (but see Markson & Bloom, 1997). |
