The Funniest Thing

My friend Hannah always tells me some funny things that happen to her. Every time she makes me happy.

A week before we had the final exam. Hannah and I weren’t in the same classroom. Each classroom had two teachers to watch the students when they were doing their test papers. When Hannah was doing history, one of the teachers went out to answer the phone. One minute later, the teacher in the classroom fell asleep, and he was snoring loudly!

“Cough! Cough!” One boy acted like he was coughing because he wanted to wake (up) him
up, but the teacher was still sleeping. “Cough! Cough!” The boy repeated, but it (doesn’t )
didn’t work. “Snap! Snap!” A girl snapped her bottle, and a boy named Andy kicked the door, but he was still sleeping.

Hannah is not a silent girl. She started laughing out loud and couldn’t stop. Wolf, a boy sat in front of her looked at her like she was crazy. Hannah was angry and used a pen to stab his back. “Ouch! Ouch!” Wolf shouted. “Ha! Ha!” Hannah laughed. “Cough! Cough!” The boy coughed. “Snap! Snap!” The girl snapped. “Bang!” Andy kicked the (door…But)
door, but the teacher was still sleeping!

Then the other teacher came back, she whispered to the man to wake up, but he did a loud snoring sound. The students couldn’t help laughing. Finally, he woke up when the other teacher used newspapers to hit his head.

Hay Lin,

This is quite funny.
I’ve never seen a teacher fall asleep before! Your used your words very well to paint a vivid picture of the event.

You are becoming a great writer.
I am so pleased with your work!
See you soon!
J

Some Foods in Puerto Rico

(Great job capitalizing your title correctly!
J )

Puerto Rico has many famous foods; it has the world’s best rum (in Spanish called ron), a special drink called piña colada and coffee.

Puerto Rico has the world’s finest light rum, or called white rum or silver rum. At first rum was the traditional drink for sailors. The first bottle of Puerto Rico’s rum was made when (sugar canes were)sugar cane was brought to Puerto Rico by Christopher Columbus. Now, Don Q is the top-selling rum in Puerto Rico, which has more than 70% of it consumed in the United States( is produced). The heart of the Puerto Rico rum industry is located just a few miles outside of San Juan.

Piña colada became the official drink in 1978. Roberto Cofresi was a pirate from Puerto Rico who mixed a cocktail of rum, coconut and pineapple in the 1800s for his crew. So people in Puerto Rico think he is the first maker of piña colada.
Puerto Rico is also a famous place for coffee, the weather there is good for coffee thee.

Hay Lin,
You wrote this week’s homework with very few errors.
Great job!
I told you that you are a good writer.
Just believe in yourself and keep practicing and working hard and you will turn into a magnificent writer.
You have very bright and have incredible potential to do anything and be anything you choose.
I am very honored to be your teacher.
I love you, Hay Lin, and am so delighted that you are my student!
Keep up the good work!

The Boston Tea Party
My name is Anne. Now it’s 1773 and I’m seven years old. I live in Boston with my parents and my big sister Jenny. It’s December now, our city is covered with ice and snow. I have a happy family, but our life wasn’t happy that much after the King in England sent soldiers in our city. Those British soldiers, we call them “lobster backs,(Put the , before the ”) always make trouble for us. They cut down our little apple tree to make fire, sleep in our house without asking and eat all the food my mom makes for dinner! I am really angry about them.
But that is not all. We can’t make things our own and we can’t buy or sell things here. We have to buy them all the way from England. Dad likes drinking tea, but the tea is too expensive because the Englishmen want to get more money. We can’t plant tea trees, either. Today Dad hurries home with excitement. He tells us some people are planning to throw English tea into the sea. They call it “the Boston tea party.”.
(Put the period before the quotation marks.)
He puts on his coat and heads to the door. I say I’d like to go with him.

The seashore is really crowed with people, I can hardly move myself. Then a boy calls “Look! Here they come!” Everybody looks at them. I see lots of men carrying lots of tea boxes, running toward the shore. Behind them are those “lobster backs,”, running, chasing. But the crowds stop them. The men throw all of the tea boxes into the sea, and everybody cheers.
Dad says there’s going to be a terrible fight, so he takes me home.

Good work, Hay Lin!
You seem to understand the reason for the American Revolution very well.
You have placed yourself in the shoes of an American child during this time period and wrote descriptively about your feelings. You also used the present tense verbs well.
I am VERY pleased!

Summery )Summary

At first, I didn’t like the books that have mysteries because they are usually alike. Some kids know there is a secret and they try to figure it out and stuff like that. But The Name of the Book is Secretreally surprised me. I ignored the warning at the first part, but when I was reading the book I knew the author was right, I just can’t stop until I finished.

It’s all started with our heroine, Cassandra, also being a survivalist. She heard a secret of the magician’s death and met The Symphony of Smells. Her curiosity about the secret pulled her into it. But when she met Max-Ernest, a person as weird as her, the curiosity turned into friendship. They sneaked in the magician’s home together and meet
met Dr. L and Mrs. Mauvais, the silver man and the gold lady. They broke out the code and find found the magician’s letter. Then their school mate Benjamin Blake was missing after Dr.L and Mrs.Mauvais’ visit. Cass wanted to rescue Benjamin but Max-Ernest didn’t. Cass knew it was her responsibility to save Benjamin and others, so she went to The Midnight Sun bravely, even she was afraid. Max-Ernest knew it’s his responsibility to take care of his collaborator, so he went to the Midnight Sun bravely, even he was afraid.

So the two kids solved many problems, broke many codes, and they are closer and closer to the secret. Our heroine Cass burned down the spa instead of herself when she was climbing down the rope by an accident. The author said “Only bad books have good endings.” I think the ending is pretty good, but that doesn’t make the book bad. Cass and Max-Ernest become
became real collaborators, and they rescued Benjamin Blake without any fight with the people in the spa.

I like this book very much. And I felt more exciting when the last page told me “it’s not yet”. I hope to read other adventures of Cass and Max-Ernest.

(P.S.Another reason for me to like this book because I kind of like Greek myths a bit…Especially Hermes, the traveling god. In the story his Egyptian name “Thoth” was a very important code.)

Good work, Hay Lin!
You wrote a very thorough review of the story!
I’m glad you like the book!
J
