Chapter 6 The TV Report Controls
The farm was like a great garage of many good things. The house was very good too. The furniture was good. The electricity wires were very good. The telephone wires were very good. The furnace leading to the chimney pipe was very clean and interesting because there were lots of different types of cobwebs in there. Even the scientists couldn’t figure them out. The stone was very good. And all the things were very good. They were also clean and tidy, except the things in the attic, which were already used and covered with dust: like cups without handles and bottles without corks. Rodents always scurried into their house, year after year, because they had lots of good things in their refrigerator. And the homemade bread they had was the best in their community. They were very happy about the farm, but the television was not good. The screen always looked gray, and there was nothing on the screen except the channel number. And nothing was on the radio except the “buzz” sound of bad reception.
One day, Mrs. Hummer said, “I’m fed up with that television. Maybe we should get a television worker to come and fix it.” It was a good idea. Everyone in the house liked that idea. Even the dog nodded his head. He was very smart. And now he could do some easy mathematics. They got a trainer because they were rich enough to hire a trainer to come once a week. And they used up so much money that they got a little bit poor the next day.
So one day the television workers came. After the check, they said “Hmm, I think there’s nothing wrong with the television. The television system is very good. We should have fixed that.” So they tried two days. But on the third day, they gave up. “We couldn’t fix this,” said the leader of the television workers, “It has to be replaced with the good one.” So they bought a good one. And the television worker came. “Where do you think we should put it,” the leader of the television workers asked.” “Just left of the bedroom window and beside the balcony. Just there,” said Mrs. Hummer. “There?” Said the television workers, and drew a square. “Very good, very good,” said Mr. Hummer. So after half a day’s time, the wires were connected, the screws were screwed in, and all the parts were done. And from now on, they even bought a new television that stuck to the wall. And wires are all connected to the TV and radio system. So all they had was a very nice farm by the end of the year.
The end of the story.
This was a very happy twelve months on the farm. They worked hard for one year to supply all the goods on the farm. And they had turned a dull farm into a lovely wonder-garden where every flower contains good things in it. By the time Mr. and Mrs. Hummer were old and retired, Frederick went to Harvard University. And by that time, the baby was in middle school. And the dog was being borrowed by the next-door neighbor, Mr. Grump, who was a policeman. And he used Hunter for a police dog. And the next day, their farm was in the newspaper. The headlines said: “Hummer’s magical farm”. |
