Hello Parents,

I hope your campers had as much fun today as we did.  The weather was perfect and everyone stayed active and engaged just about every minute.  The artists spent the morning doing stone sculptures in the stream with Annie Bristow and making monotype prints with Jean Downs.  The poets also did monotype prints with Jean but spent most of the day exploring nature and beginning to write about it with Nina, Jennifer  and Cassie .  In the afternoon the Park Rangers took the artists on a birding exhibition.  Everyone was so busy it was hard to find a moment for graham crackers in the morning and pretzels in the afternoon, not to mention lunch and recess in the middle of the day.  A highlight of the poets day was the discovery that a squirrel had absconded with an entire package of crackers and when Alina spotted him munching away looked up at her as if to say "Who, me??"

Tomorrow the poets will spend the morning writing haiku and tanka poetry with Jennifer Merrifield and NIna Forsythe  and the afternoon birding with the park rangers.  The artists will spend part of the day with Frank Fotia helping him to build bee havens and the other part with Natalie Atherton working with clay. Though we didn't have time today, our plan is to have the campers keep a journal with words and images to capture their experience in the S River watershed.

I sent home with campers today a note from Tracy  about the parents potluck picnic on Friday after camp.  Please let Tracy know if you will be able to make it!

Attached are a few photos from Day 1.

Here's to more happy camping!

Dear Parents,

Another glorious day at the State Park - blue skies and sunshine all day long.  (I am reminded of last year when camp took place the HOTTEST week of the year - the high 90s all week!)  So we have been very lucky weather-wise.  Also, creativity-wise.  Both the highly energized and creative campers and their remarkable art and poetry teachers are really something to behold.

Although the poetry and art campers worked separately today - except for group lunch - they were all extremely busy.  In addition to learning about Haiku poetry with Jennifer, our young poets created a remarkably elegant and elaborate stone sculpture in the stream with Annie and went birding with Ranger.  What a wonderfully collaborative and friendly group this is!

And the same can be said of the art campers - every one of them is cheerful and ready to take on the next challenge.  Today the artists were divided into small groups to  creating Bee Havens with Frank; work with clay with Natalie in the pavilion and then later create clay "creatures" of different kinds on the stream;  and draw in nature with Jean. Today, art campers also began what will be a daily event -- writing in their journals -- to help them "remember back, discover, and reflect on new ideas."

We saw a lot of smiles today - everyone is getting to know one another so well that by tomorrow no more nametags!  And none of the campers complained about my "healthy snacks." No chocolate chip cookies for them - fresh appie slices, string cheese, and raisins.  (Did I mention how good natured these campers are?)

Both poets and artists had much to show for today's work:  some campers had written half a dozen haiku poems by lunchtime!  artists' portfolios are starting to bulge with drawings and monotype prints, and the bee havens they created today will be installed on Friday .

Tomorrow we have a camp favorite "Salamander Scurry" on our schedule, followed by  "graphic storytelling" with Pat  in which campers will recount what they learned about salamanders with pictures instead of words.    There will also be water painting in the steam with Jean and more clay fun with Natalie.  Poetry Campers will begin work on an original collaborative poem and do individual work on "list" and "litany"poems.  They will also be taking a Sensory Walk with Cassie.

Just a reminder to contact Tracy whether or not you will be participating in the potluck picnic on Friday after the Campers' Showcase on Friday.  This will help us determine whether we'll need to call for the bus to take people home or whether parents will be there Friday afternoon instead.

Okay - that's all for now.  See everyone tomorrow!
