Q. We are working through List U-1. In my Wise Guide, the "ol" in "colonel" is underlined. Could you please explain why this is the case? Also, what would the accompanying dialogue be with the fingergrams?

A. The OL is not a phonogram but it is underlined with an X because the OL is a strange combination that represents the sound /er/. SWR explains why on page 81. If you have a more current edition of the book, you will see that link.

We teach it for think to spell the way it is spelled /col-O-nel/. Then we say it as /ker-nel/. Does that help clarify this for you.

Blessings,

Wanda Sanseri

真的是哎,以前还没注意过这个单词的发音呢。
新牛津英文大词典对这个单词的来源解释为:from French coronel (earlier form of colonel), from Italian colonnello "column of soldiers", from colonna "column", fron latin columna. The form coronel, source of the modern pronunciation, was usual until the mid 17th cent. 因为这个单词的现代发音来源形式为coronel,所以读作 /ker-nel/。
