I have a few questions in regard to the Reading Club.
What is the main goal of the class?  To improve understanding of the written word?  To improve listening and reading skills?  To get students to want to read more?

If the main goal is to improve understanding of the written word or to improve listening, speaking, and reading skills, then much of the reading material should be done in class with little outside reading of the chosen book.  (Outside work could include activities or lessons that center around the themes discussed each week.  Perhaps extended reading of other materials related to the book being discussed. )   If this is the goal, then an average sized-book should last several sessions with much discussion.  Perhaps, we could read a chapter or two together during a session and discuss the material as we read it - - - and then assign a chapter or two  each week for homework and discuss what was read.

If the main goal is to induce the love of reading, then a book for reading and discussion should only last one or two weeks.  Lots of reading outside of class and just a session or two of the discussion of the material.

Can students use a webcam or take pictures/videos of their completed work to share with the class?  I have included some of the fun book report ideas that my English students have used and enjoyed.  I am not exactly sure if these ideas can be adapted to use in an online class.   I'm sure the student would enjoy doing the outside work and showing their products to the class would help spark the love of the book.  (See the attachment and perhaps you could tell if these ideas would work online.)  :-)

I've thought a great deal about the idea of an online reading club and the following ideas came to mind.  Please make suggestions according to the goals you want accomplished.

After the first session the following could take place.

1.    Students and teacher discuss chapters that were assigned for homework. (Let's say, for example Chapters 1-2 of Where the Red Fern Grows.)  Students must submit questions that they encounter while reading the selection.
These will questions will be discussed by all in the class.

2.  Students present "chapter/ unit"  fun book reports or writing selections that were assigned for homework.  All students see the work and further discussion will be encouraged.

3.  Students will then take turns readiing new material online during the class.  Thorough discussion of that material will take place.

4.  Teacher will motivate students with tidbits of what will take place in the next chapters and will assign homework.

OR . . . . .

The entire book for discussion (Let's say "Where the Red Fern Grows will be read orally in class together and discussed at length.  Students may choose other books for weekly / monthly outside reading and present the fun book reports about those books to encourage their peers to want to read the books they have chosen.  Time in class will be given for students to present their fun book reports.  (Perhaps half of the class could present their report one week and the other half of the class the next week, making for two book reports per month from each student.)   Or only one book report presentation could be given each week and discussion could center around that book.  So - - - the presentation given by the student could act as a book review - - - convincing me to choose their book as a possible candidate for the entire class to read in upcoming weeks.  The rest of the class could then be referrred back to the current oral reading selection (Where the Red Fern Grows)

I'm sure other ideas will develop as the class progresses, but these ideas are a starter.

I was thinking that perhaps the first book read and discussed should be a very light-hearted one to ensure the students have fun while reading.  Perhaps "Mr Popper's Penguins" (unless the students have already seen the new movie released by this title)  would be a good choice or "Henry Huggins."  Both lend themselves to humor and will be thoroughly enjoyed.  then perhaps heavier reading could be introduced (Where the Red Fern Grows) in later sessions.  I, will however, leave the choice to you.
I would only make one request and that would be to refrain from including books that deal with the occult, witchcraft, paganism,  etc.

Thanks, ------

Where the Red Fern Grows这本书,第一二章。

OR . . . . . 或者

Where the Red Fern Grows这样深沉的作品在稍后的课上读会比较合适。
