Tuck Everlasting Book Review
Ten- year old Winnie finds Jesse-- one of the Tucks in the wood by accident, and discovers that he and his family will live forever. She finds out that they once drank water from a magic spring. To prevent her from telling others, the Tucks take her back to their house and try to explain to her the importance of not telling everybody. During Winnie’s visit, she realizes she’s deeply in love with the seventeen year-old handsome Jesse. Jesse gives her a bottle of spring water and tells her to wait until she’s seventeen, and then she can drink the water and become immortal like him so they can live forever. She thinks about it for a long time and finally decides not to do it.
If somebody asked me before I read this book, “Would you like to live forever?” I’m sure my answer would be “Of course!” After all, who doesn’t want to live forever? But after reading this book, I began to think. Will I be sorry afterward if I have the ability to live forever?
I will have to hide from everybody and find different jobs now and then because people will think I’m cursed, and I won’t have a real home. I will have to move from place to place, never settling down. What is the point of being alive if I don’t have a real home, a real name or a true identity? Everything about me is a fake. I will be like an actress, acting forever on a stage. Then someday, I won’t know if something is true or not, because I have been acting for too long.
Why do people want to live forever? Because it’ll give them plenty of time to do the things they like. But imagine! If I have all the time in the world, will I hurry up and do the things I should? No. “I still have tomorrow to do it.” I’ll say. We cherish every second because life is short and precious. If I’m immortal, every single day will be meaningless.
If I become immortal now, I may always remain at the age of fourteen. I will never experience what life is like when I’m thirty or older. Think about all the new things I will learn, the new friends I will make and the new things I will experience if I can grow older! Life is just at the beginning, and if I make it stop, I will never reach the end.
If everybody else around me grows older while I remain the same, I will suffer to see the ones I love grow old and die. I will be like a loose string that is cut off from a long rope. After many years, the rope decayed except for a single loosens string that is still as colorful as always.
Maybe you’ll say, “How about letting everyone in the world drink some spring water? Then you don’t have to watch them grow old and die.” But can you imagine how horrible it is? After a hundred or a thousand years, still the same people living on earth! Never will there be anything new; never will there be a new born baby. If life is a wheel, always turning, then the wheel is stuck if people never change.
Just like what Mr. Tuck said, “Life is always moving, growing, changing; never the same two minutes together.” Everything is always moving on. The sun sucks the water right out of the ocean and carries it back in clouds, and then it rains, and the rain falls into the stream, and the stream keeps moving on. Everything is a wheel, turning and turning, never stopping. The weathers and the animals are part of the wheel, and people too. The magic of people is they’re always changing. If people no longer change, then they’re not living, they just exist. They are not part of the wheel. Dying is also part of the wheel; it is up there right next to being born. If people can’t die, their life would not be complete.
Boys grow into men in a few years; Wiggling caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies in days; the golden sun sinks under the horizon in minutes; the sound of a frog jumping into the pond only last for seconds. These things are all beautiful because of its shortness. Life, too, is very short, but that’s what makes life precious, memorable and beautiful. How can people realize the short beauty of sunset if they have all the time in the world while it will be only three precious minutes before the sun sinks under the horizon? Let’s cherish the gift God gives us—life, and make every single day of our life useful and meaningful.
