1. Overall: I was impressed with Terry’s listening and speaking abilities. He is able to understand a large portion of daily conversational English at a normal rate. I think he would do well in continuing his English study by focusing on oral English, reading skills, and expand vocabulary. In terms of Terry’s discipline incident, I think that Terry is a good boy, and a good student. I expect that in the future, when Terry is more clear about the expectations for my classes, he will be able to complete all of the assignments very comfortably.
2. Phonics: Terry has good phonics skills. He is able to sound out many new words to a high degree of accuracy, even if he has not studied the word before. Helping Terry increase phonics skills will help him read faster and speak more accurately.
3. Pronunciation: Terry demonstrates good pronunciation accuracy. Continued focus on “listen and repeat” exercises with recordings of native English speakers will be helpful for continued improvement in pronunciation ability.
4. Vocabulary: Terry is able to understand a large portion of daily conversational English. I expect that his vocabulary is roughly 2000 – 2500 words. This should serve as a good base as he continues to study more academic language.
5. Listening: Terry’s listening skills are strong enough to allow him to understand a native speaker at a slightly reduced rate of speech. When discussing words outside of his range of proficiency, he has trouble understanding without a clear explanation of the key vocabulary. Terry will need more practice and exposure to different language speeds and vocabulary to improve his comprehension of more complex language.
6. Speaking: Terry is able to express himself accurately with simple sentences and single word responses. He is also able to give accurate and logical answers to follow up questions designed to test his speaking ability. In general, he tended to answer questions briefly, with little extra information, however that was probably due to the fact our meeting was rushed. During class, Terry was able in speaking exercises and I am convinced that he has already approached a speaking level that is acceptably fluent for daily conversation. His challenge will be to continue to improve fluency in more complex areas of speech. He will also benefit from speaking practice in more formal conversational and academic speech making settings.
7. Reading and Critical Thinking: Terry displayed good reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. He was able to use context and textual information to understand the meaning of key vocabulary in the text. He was also able to make deductions from the text using background information and common knowledge. It is my belief that helping Terry learn to use reading comprehension strategies will greatly enhance his ability to read and understand native English content more accurately and comfortably. |
