The book tells us a great story about an old fisherman. Santiago, the old man, wasn’t really lucky at that period of time, he hadn’t caught a fish for 84 days and on the 40th day, a boy who fish with him all the time had to leave him because of his parents. Although the boy, Manolin, was not able to fish with him anymore, he still was supporting Santiago. The boy talked with him, bought him beer and coffee as well as supper, listened to him while he was talking about baseball. On the 85th day, the old man decided to fish far away in order to get some good ones. In the morning, he caught a ten-pound tuna and determined to use it as baits. At noon, a great marlin ate the bait, but the old man couldn’t pull it up, so the marlin was dragging the boat under the water, Santiago spent all his strength on preventing the fish from escaping. After struggling with the fish, the marlin finally came out of the water, so the old man killed the fish with his harpoon, but the scent of the blood left a mark to sharks. Santiago killed the first three sharks with his harpoon and his oar and knife, but he couldn’t stop the following sharks from taking all the meat from the marlin, after fighting for three days, all the things the old man got were the big fish’s bone.
This is a really short novel but we get a lot of things from it. We can see the old man’s struggle, his resistant, his friendship with Manlin from the story. The old man’s spirit is best shown in the sentence he said “A man can be destroyed but never defeated”. Although he hadn’t caught a single fish for 84 days, he did not give up fishing, although the big marlin had been pulling his boat for two days, he did not give up struggling. He failed at last, indeed, but that couldn’t stop him from being a hero, we can see that from how the villagers attitude towards the old man changed, three days ago, all the people expect Manolin laughed at him and regarded him as a loser, but after he caught that huge fish and brought back its bone, they all started to respect him. Though at that time he was not really lucky, he was lucky enough to have a friend like Manlin, the huge gap they have couldn’t stop them from being friends. It was the boy who helped and encouraged him when he haven’t caught a fish for 84 day and when he came back from the sea, exhausted, it was the boy again who keep guard and take care of him, brought him hot coffee as well. We can see the purely friendship between them, and that friendship gave the old man energy while he was in the sea so he could carry on and was able to not give up.
Resistant, struggle, friendship, we can get a lot of things from the book, and all those things make the book wonderful and you can enjoy reading it.
