端砚始于初唐，距今以有１３００多年的历史，端砚以其上乘的石质成名于中唐．端砚发展经过宋、元发展时期后，又经历了明清成熟期、清末明初的衰落期，以及建国后恢复发展时期．端砚形制在唐宋时期较为简单、古朴、注重实用．明代砚的欣赏价值趋于强化，花式品种不断增多．而清代的端砚形制已是集工艺、雕刻、绘画、书法、篆刻等艺术门类于一身的文方珍品．现、当代雕砚名家在继承古代雕刻艺术基础上，更多的以本地名胜风景、传说及特产为题材，大胆创新，其艺术创作更是向大型化，立体化方向发展，呈现了『百花齐放』局面，创作了许多具有鲜明民族特色和时代风采的优秀作品，使端砚无论是数量或是质量方面，都有了长足的发展.名词简介:石眼   是端溪砚中天然生长的如鸟兽眼睛状的"石核"。 端砚石眼呈翠绿、黄绿、米黄、黄白或粉绿等色，大小不一，3～5毫米不等，个别大于7～10毫米。鱼脑冻  鱼脑冻的色泽是白中有黄而略带青，也有白中微带灰黄色的，是砚石中最细腻、最幼嫩之处。最佳的鱼脑冻应是洁白如晴云，白中带淡青色或白中带淡紫色，色泽清晰、透彻。刻砚艺人，一般都把鱼脑冻完整地保留在墨堂之中。有鱼脑冻的砚石，质地高洁，石质特别细腻、幼嫩、滋润，一般出现在水岩、坑仔岩和麻子坑。蕉叶白  蕉叶白又称蕉白，其特点如蕉叶初展，一片娇嫩，白中略带青黄色，最佳的蕉叶白呈含露欲滴、成片（即成半圆形）状。蕉叶白多出现在水岩、坑仔岩、麻子坑和*罗蕉坑等。青 花  青花是自然生长在砚石中的青蓝色的微小斑点，一般要水湿方能显露，青花以细者、活者、沉者佳，粗者、枯者、露者次之。而以如细尘掩明镜、墨沈濡纸者为绝品。有青花的端砚石质地细腻、幼嫩、滋润，多出现在水岩、坑仔岩和麻子坑等。火 捺  火捺也称火烙，以其似火烙或灼伤的肌肉色泽得名。一般以老、嫩区分；老者紫中带黑，嫩者紫中带微红。细分则有胭脂晕火捺、马尾纹火捺、猪肝冻、金钱火捺等。火捺多出现在水岩、坑仔岩、麻子坑和宋坑等。天 青  天青如秋雨乍晴、蔚蓝无际，在端砚石中色青微带灰白，纯洁无瑕。天青出自水岩、坑仔岩、麻子坑、宣德岩和古塔岩等。翡 翠  翡翠在端砚石中呈翠绿色的圆点、或椭圆点，或条状，并有翡翠纹、翡翠斑、翡翠点、翡翠条和翡翠冻之别。 金、银线  金、银线恰似线条状横斜或竖立在砚石之中。黄色者为金线，白色者为银线。金、银线是水岩砚中独有的一种石品花纹（麻子坑、坑仔岩偶然也有发现）。冰 纹  冰纹有如悬崖的瀑布，一泻千尺。白中有晕，向两边融化开去，似线非线，似水非水。冰纹是水岩独有的一种石品花纹（坑仔岩、麻子坑偶有发现，但极少）。鹧鸪斑  鹧鸪斑也称麻雀斑，是呈椭圆形的小斑点，疏密不一地洒落在砚石上，斑点有白中带黄色，黄中带褐色或青中带黑色，恰似鹧鸪或麻雀身上毛色的斑点，故名。四大名砚:端砚其材料取于广东肇庆高要县东南端溪之烂河山（又称斧柯山）因其“体重而轻，质刚而柔，摸之寂寞无纤响，按之如小儿肌肤，温软嫩而不滑”且有不损毫，宜发墨的特点。自唐代问世以来，便颇受文人学士青睐。加上纹理绮丽，各具名目，加工技艺亦愈纷繁，地位越来越高，以致升到我国石砚之首，长盛不衰。歙砚 其料取于江西婺源县（唐属歙州）龙尾山一带溪涧中，故又称之为龙尾砚。其石坚润，抚之如肌，磨之有锋，涩水留笔，滑不拒墨，墨小易干，涤之立净。自唐以来，一直保持其名砚地位。洮砚 亦称洮河砚。其料取于甘肃卓尼（唐属洮州）一带洮河深水处。因其石质细腻，纹理如丝，气色秀润，发墨细快，保温利笔，北方最为贵重，宋时已经稀少，解放后又恢复了生产。红丝砚其料取于山东青州黑山，为鲁砚代表。因其“资质润美发墨，久为水所浸渍，即有膏液出焉”，且文采鲜丽，曾受到柳公权的盛赞，宋时因石脉采尽而停止。解放后又发现了新的石脉，红丝砚重又出于世，只是资源不丰。【仙乐飘飘】特色：造型独特,殊有生趣!<img
