这首歌，是三十年代美国拍摄的故事影片《翠堤春晓(The Great Waltz)》里的一首插曲。　 这是一部描写“圆舞曲之王”约翰·施特劳斯(Johann Straus II)的生活故事影片。在这部影片里，施特劳斯爱上了一位女高音歌唱家，他们在一起时，那位歌唱家经常唱他写的这首歌。由于这首歌曲调很优美，便于记忆，又有这么一个动人的情节，因此，给观众印象深刻。 　 影片放映之后，到处传唱。人们还以为施特劳斯当年真的为这位歌唱家写了这么一首情歌。实际上，这部影片里的故事情节，有一些是虚构的，这首歌曲的诞生便是一例。它是影片编导者借用了约翰·施特劳斯1885年写的轻歌剧《吉普赛男爵》里的一首男女声二重唱的曲调，由奥斯卡·汉默斯顿(Oscar Hammerstein II)根据影片故事情节的需要重新填词，才成为现在这首歌的。因为影片流传很广，人们才错认为约翰·施特劳斯当初写过这么一首曲名叫《当我们年轻时》的情歌。

第2首歌是：Born Free，生来自由

这首美国影片《生来自由》的插曲获1966年第39届奥斯卡最佳电影歌曲金奖，影片音乐获最佳创作奖。这部电影描写埃丹森夫妇在肯尼亚与狮子“爱尔莎”相处的故事。埃丹森夫人1960年写了《狮子与我》一书，出版后引起轰动。哥伦比亚影业公司据此摄制了一部彩色片《生来自由（Born Free）》，由杰姆斯、赫尔导演，弗吉妮亚·麦肯娜饰演埃丹森夫人。

小的时候，约翰·列农一遇到什么麻烦，母亲就告诉他：”随它去，顺其自然。”他长大之后，自己再遇到不顺心的事，又看到许多人生活的不如意，往往想起母亲那充满睿智的话。这句话打动了他的伙伴保罗·麦卡特尼，他由此创作了这首歌。1970年3月21日入榜首周就高挂百名单曲榜第6名，创榜史记录。英国渡轮“自由企业先驱”号遇难时，英国众歌星演唱了这首歌，在场观众无不为之动情。
