September 17th and 18th, 2005, Saturday and Sunday
We spent two days weekend with Grandma’s mom and Grandma’s brother at their apartment in Holtville, Imperial Valley. Here are some learning experience occurred during that time:

4. Science:
On the way to Imperial Valley, Sarah noticed that when we were driving through the Rock Mountains, there was nothing but cactus plants on the Rock Mountains. She asked why only cactus was growing there. I responded that it appeared to be very dry in the area. It seemed that only cactus can survive there. I went on explained that cactus has a meaty body where it can store water and while it also has needle like leaves that will prevent water from evaporation. Cactus can grow on very dry lands. We also noticed that other plants growing in the area also have a dry appearance and tiny leaves. Sarah asked why the trees with big leaves were not growing there. I said because the big leaves tree will breathe out a lot of water via the big leaves thus required a lot more water than the trees with tiny leaves. The trees with big leaves can’t survive on very dry lands. Around the apartment where the Great-Grandma lives, Sarah has also noticed that majority plants there had tiny leaves and appeared dry and there were some cactus plants as well, different from the plants we see in San Diego.
Your big backyard (09/2005): Apple tree sequencing
Food hunt
5. Social studies:
Around the apartment complex where great-grandmother lives, we saw many Mexican flags displaying outside residents’ windows and doors. Grandma told us that Mexican independent day was celebrated on 09/16 which is equivalent to July 4th independent day of the United States. Sarah and I observed the flag very closely first time in her life. She noticed that in the middle of the flag, there was a symbol of an eagle sitting on some cactus plants holding a snake in its mouth. Daddy told us the legend behind the flag symbol: many years ago, Aztecs (Indian tribes then living in Mexico) asked God for sign of the land that they can build their country on. God gave them this sign of an eagle sitting on the cactus plants holding a snake in its mouth. Based on that sign, they found the land where they built the country on and now becomes the Mexico City.
6. Math:
While we were eating in Subway on the way back home, we were practicing counting to 100 in English and Chinese.
7. Service:
Sarah drew a picture of Thumbelina for great-grandma and a picture of cars for grand Uncle Andy. She made a card with her drawing of our neighbor’s house for Abigail’s mom since she is going for surgery on Monday.
September 22nd, 2005, Thursday

Science? During afternoon quiet time, Sarah was out in the backyard with Jimmy. She has a plastic jar (ABC cookie jar) in her hand with opening upside down. She said she was going to catch flies that way. She attempted several times with no success. She asked me to help. I tried a couple of times. But flies were just too fast for us to catch them. I asked Sarah to quit. But she said Jimmy wanted flies as pet and she did not want to disappoint him. She thought a bit and said how about letting jar stand upright with the opening open on the top and let flies flying in on their own. Then she said we needed some bait. She wanted to put some Pupu in the jar. I discouraged that idea and offered to put some overriped apple in the jar. Before long, we caught 2 flies in the jar trying to reach in to the apple. Sarah and Jimmy were very excited that they found a way to catch the flies. They enjoyed observing two captured flies.
