Michael Buckley is best known for the fantastic Sisters Grimm series for children. In NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society he leaves behind all the fairy tale characters and enters a world that is truly frightening, elementary school. NERDS begins a new series about a group of elementary school students that also happen to be secret agents charged with the responsibility of keeping the rest of the world safe. This action packed book is not all flashy stunts; it also covers deeper topics about bullying and acceptance that all children can relate with.
NERDS tell focuses on Jackson Jones, popular golden boy. Due to an unfortunate dental oddity, Jackson loses his standing as most popular football player at Nathan Hale Elementary School and becomes too low for the outcasts that he used to torment to befriend. At a loss, he decides to spy on his classmates and discover the secrets of the school, but he gets in a little too deep. Soon he discovers, and joins up with, a team of nerds that also happen to be super spies with abilities that turn their weaknesses into strengths. Team cohesion is not gained as easily as Jackson's new special ability since his new teammates are those that he was the most vicious with as a popular bully. However, the team needs to learn to work together quickly before the evil Dr. Jigsaw can carry out his plan.
NERDS is a fun, action packed spy story with many tongue in check references to spies in popular culture. Buckley writes with both suspense and humor on just about every page. He is a master of exaggerated humor, but manages to cover actual lessons for the reader to learn without becoming preachy or overwhelming the fun in the book. Lessons in this book, and presumably the rest of the series, are that children can grow up to be anyone. Outcasts are often the innovators and success stories of the future, while the popular set can easily live their best years in school. Jackson's tough relationship with his athletic father and brother are also explored.
Despite these heavy topics, NERDS is highly entertaining and a great read for children in fourth grade up, as well as their parents. I think that this book will be a great chose for boys and reluctant readers in this age group. Adults that enjoy reading children and young adult literature will enjoy this book as well. Buckley is well on his way to becoming one of my favorite authors for this tough age group.
