  2. http://www.mercywatson.com/#books
Mr. and Mrs. Watson have a pig named Mercy. Mercy enjoys driving cars, going trick-or-treating, and a good chase. But above all else, Mercy enjoys toast with great deal of butter on it. It is her search for toast that often gets Mercy into all kinds of hilarious trouble. There are six fun-filled adventures starring Mercy: Mercy Watson to the Rescue Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride Mercy Watson Fights Crime Mercy Watson Princess in Disguise Mercy Watson Thinks Like A Pig Mercy Watson Something Wonky This Way Comes. From the Author "Mercy Watson had been in my head for a long time," says Kate DiCamillo, "but I couldn’t figure out how to tell her story. One day, my friend Alison was going on and on and on about the many virtues of toast. As I listened to her, I could see Mercy nodding in emphatic agreement. Sometimes you don’t truly understand a character until you know what she loves above all else."

. . . . Mercy Watson to the Rescue
illustrated by Chris Van Dusen Candlewick Press, August 2005
Lexile : 450L
Awards: Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Award (Nominated, 2007)
American Library Association Notable Books for Children (Won, 2006)
Beehive Children's Fictional Book Award (Nominated, 2007)
Welcome to the wry and endearing world of Mercy Watson—the beloved "porcine wonder" of the Watson household. In this first episode, the Watsons need rescuing when their bed—after Mercy hops on—begins to slowly sink through the floor. Mercy escapes—"to alert the fire department," her owners assure themselves. But could Mercy have another emergency in mind—like a sudden craving for their neighbors’ sugar cookies?
Reviews Oh, Mercy, what a pig! Mercy is a fat little porker, a beloved member of the Watson family. When Mr and Mrs. Watson sing her a happy morning song, she feels as warm inside as buttered toast. But when the lights go off, Mercy is so scared she gets in bed with the Watsons. The bed breaks under the weight, which leads to a series of hysterical events. The Watsons think Mercy is on the way to call the fire department, when, in fact, she wants to see if next-door neighbor Baby Lincoln has any buttered toast. After another misunderstanding and a merry chase, the firemen arrive--just in time to rescue the Watsons, who are about to fall through the floor. Mercy is a heroine (to the Watsons, at least), resulting in more songs and towers of toast. Appropriate as both a picture book and a beginning reader, this joyful story combines familiar elements (the unexpected heroine, the mean neighbor) with a raucous telling that lets readers in on the joke. Van Dusen's artwork is also spot-on. The gouache illustrations are polished to a sheen and have plenty of heft. The characters are exaggerated with a vintage cartoon flair; Mercy, for instance, looks like a piggy bank that has sprung to life. Another jolly adventure about Mercy is in the works. —Ilene Cooper, Booklist

. . . . Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride
illustrated by Chris Van Dusen Candlewick Press, May 2006
Lexile : 390L
Awards: Giesel Honor book (Won 2007)
Flicker Tale Children's Book Award (Nominated, 2007)
Mr. and Mrs. Watson's porcine wonder, Mercy, loves nothing more than a ride in the car. It takes a fair amount of nudging and bribing and a "You are such a good sport, darling" to get the portly pig out of the driver's seat, but once the convertible is on the road, Mercy loves the feel of the wind tickling her ears and the sun on her snout. One day the Watsons' motoring ritual takes an unexpected turn, however, when their elderly neighbor Baby Lincoln pops up in the backseat in hopes of some "folly and adventure" — and in the chaos that ensues, an exuberant Mercy ends up behind the wheel! Soon there's a policeman on her tail, a struggle for the brake, and a blissfully airborne Mercy. Of course, it's nothing that an extra helping of buttered toast can't fix!
Reviews Another action-packed escapade staring the porcine wonder. Every weekend, when Mr. Watson takes his pig for a ride in his pink convertible, Mercy must be cajoled out of the driver's seat with the promise of a tasty treat upon their return. One Saturday, their elderly neighbor, Baby Lincoln, stows away in the backseat. Man and pig speed happily along until Baby reveals her presence. Surprised, Mr. Watson takes his eyes off the road, and Mercy seizes her chance, jumps into his lap, and grabs the wheel. The vehicle zooms along, pursued by a police car. With Mr. Watson unable to reach the brake, it takes some heroics from Baby to save the day. Back at the house, the ever-serene Mrs. Watson manages to mollify everyone—including Baby's crotchety sister and the angry policeman—with a stack of hot buttered toast. Written with simple vocabulary and lots of repetition, the quick-paced narrative flows gracefully and is packed with amusing moments. The glossy, full-color gouache paintings provide visual clues to support the text and add greatly to the humor. The characters' facial expressions are laugh-out-loud funny, and the idealized 1950s setting strikes just the right tone of innocence. A fresh, fun-filled must-have for those looking to spiff up beginning-chapter-book collections. —Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal Mercy the pig, who proved herself a worthy child substitute in ercy Watson to the Rescue (2005), is up to her old tricks again. This time the self-absorbed, endearingly naughty Mercy brings many a child's dream to life: she squeezes herself onto Mr. Watson's lap and commandeers his beloved 1959 pink Caddy for a joyride. Van Dusen's larger-than-life characters and retro sensibility extend the dry humor of the situation, and his shiny, rainbow-bright gouache art shoots the energy, especially Mercy's, right off the page. Great for emergent readers. —Stephanie Zvirin, Booklist

. . . Mercy Watson Fights Crime
illustrated by Chris Van Dusen Candlewick Press, August 2006
Early chapter book, ISBN 0-7636-2590-6
Lexile : 390L
Leroy Ninker is a small man with a big dream: he wants to be a cowboy, but for now he's just a thief. In fact, Leroy is robbing the Watsons' kitchen right this minute! As he drags the toaster across the counter — screeeeeech — and drops it into his bag — clannngggg — little does he know that a certain large pig who loves toast with a great deal of butter is stirring from sleep. Even less could he guess that comedy of errors (not to mention the buttery sweets in his pocket) will soon lead this little man on the wild and raucous rodeo ride he's always dreamed of! Nosy neighbors, astonished firemen, a puzzled policeman, and the ever-doting Watsons return for a new tongue-in-snout adventure about Kate DiCamillo's delightfully single-minded pig.
Read the Reviews Another rollicking adventure starring the porcine wonder. One night, Mercy awakes to the sound of the toaster scraping along the kitchen counter, which can only mean one thing–someone is making toast. Her life revolves around hot buttered toast, so she heads for the kitchen. There she finds a little man in a ten-gallon hat stealing the toaster along with other household items. Hilarity ensues, and all of the familiar characters from the previous books make appearances. Humor abounds in this tale, both the slapstick and more subtle variety, which will keep newly independent readers turning the pages. DiCamillo has creatively woven in the elements that a good easy reader should have: repetition, simple sentence structure, and controlled vocabulary. Van Dusen's stylized illustrations enhance the action through their bright colors and exaggerated appearances of the humans. A great addition. —Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR, School Library Journal
This silly story makes my nearly 9-year-old son laugh out loud at every reading (yes, it’s been requested multiple times). —Denver Post

. . . . Mercy Watson Princess in Disguise
illustrated by Chris Van Dusen Candlewick Press, July 2007
Lexile : 390L
Can visions of treats entice a porcine wonder to wear her princess costume? Hold on for some Halloween havoc, Mercy Watson-style! When the Watsons decide to zip their porcine wonder into a formfitting princess dress for Halloween — complete with tiara — they are certain that Mercy will be beautiful beyond compare. Mercy is equally certain she likes the sound of trick-or-treating and can picture those piles of buttered toast already. As for the Lincoln Sisters next door, how could they know that their cat would get into the act and lead them all on a Halloween "parade" of hysterical proportions? Kate DiCamillo’s beguiling pig is back in a tale full of treats, tricky turns, hijinks, and high humor.
