http://www.bjnews.com.cn/ent/2012/08/10/215887.html

Tuck Everlasting Book Review

Ten- year old Winnie finds Jesse-- one of the Tucks in the wood by accident, and discovers that he and his family will live forever. She finds out that they once drank water from a magic spring. To prevent her from telling others, the Tucks take her back to their house and try to explain to her the importance of not telling everybody. During Winnie’s visit, she realizes she’s deeply in love with the seventeen year-old handsome Jesse. Jesse gives her a bottle of spring water and tells her to wait until she’s seventeen, and then she can drink the water and become immortal like him so they can live forever. She thinks about it for a long time and finally decides not to do it.

If somebody asked me before I read this book, “Would you like to live forever?” I’m sure my answer would be “Of course!” After all, who doesn’t want to live forever? But after reading this book, I began to think. Will I be sorry afterward if I have the ability to live forever?

I will have to hide from everybody and find different jobs now and then because people will think I’m cursed, and I won’t have a real home. I will have to move from place to place, never settling down. What is the point of being alive if I don’t have a real home, a real name or a true identity? Everything about me is a fake. I will be like an actress, acting forever on a stage. Then someday, I won’t know if something is true or not, because I have been acting for too long.

Why do people want to live forever? Because it’ll give them plenty of time to do the things they like. But imagine! If I have all the time in the world, will I hurry up and do the things I should? No. “I still have tomorrow to do it.” I’ll say. We cherish every second because life is short and precious. If I’m immortal, every single day will be meaningless.

If I become immortal now, I may always remain at the age of fourteen. I will never experience what life is like when I’m thirty or older. Think about all the new things I will learn, the new friends I will make and the new things I will experience if I can grow older! Life is just at the beginning, and if I make it stop, I will never reach the end.

If everybody else around me grows older while I remain the same, I will suffer to see the ones I love grow old and die. I will be like a loose string that is cut off from a long rope. After many years, the rope decayed except for a single loosens string that is still as colorful as always.

Maybe you’ll say, “How about letting everyone in the world drink some spring water? Then you don’t have to watch them grow old and die.” But can you imagine how horrible it is? After a hundred or a thousand years, still the same people living on earth! Never will there be anything new; never will there be a new born baby. If life is a wheel, always turning, then the wheel is stuck if people never change.

Just like what Mr. Tuck said, “Life is always moving, growing, changing; never the same two minutes together.” Everything is always moving on. The sun sucks the water right out of the ocean and carries it back in clouds, and then it rains, and the rain falls into the stream, and the stream keeps moving on. Everything is a wheel, turning and turning, never stopping. The weathers and the animals are part of the wheel, and people too. The magic of people is they’re always changing. If people no longer change, then they’re not living, they just exist. They are not part of the wheel. Dying is also part of the wheel; it is up there right next to being born. If people can’t die, their life would not be complete.

Boys grow into men in a few years; Wiggling caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies in days; the golden sun sinks under the horizon in minutes; the sound of a frog jumping into the pond only last for seconds. These things are all beautiful because of its shortness. Life, too, is very short, but that’s what makes life precious, memorable and beautiful. How can people realize the short beauty of sunset if they have all the time in the world while it will be only three precious minutes before the sun sinks under the horizon? Let’s cherish the gift God gives us—life, and make every single day of our life useful and meaningful.

Limericks:

1. There once was a small boy named Jake,
Who didn’t quite know how to bake.
He put in some spice,
With pepper and ice.
“Hey, Do you still call that a cake?”

2. I once saw a cat on a tree,
Being chased by a huge buzzing bee.
I threw lots of sticks,
And then lots of bricks,
The huge bee then chased after me!

3. I spotted a coat that was white;
The color and price were just right.
I soon bought the coat,
But then left a note,
“Exchange it! It’s terribly tight!”

4. When eight I was given a frog,
When nine I was given a hog,
But frogs were too jumpy,
And hogs were too grumpy.
I hoped to be given a dog!

5. There once was a young boy named Paul.
On Wednesday he walked to a mall.
He dreamed of a lunch,
With chips that go “crunch”,
And bumped his head right on a wall!

6. My mom had a red-headed pig.
It once saw a cow that was big.
The cow slowly said,
“Hey, why’s your head red?”
“Because I am wearing a wig!”

7. A little girl started to weep,
“Please help me, the hole is too deep!”
Sue’s mother then cried,
And ran to her side,
But Sue was already asleep.

8. The tiger loved eating a shoe,
He ate a big pile of meat too!
He once ate some hams,
And three little lambs,
The next thing he’d eat would be YOU! J

Mandarin and the Duck
A long time ago, there were no other seasons except winter. Everybody had no feelings, no love, and no colors except a girl named Mandarin who lived in a big wooden house deep inside the forest. She had a heart of gold. Her hair was blonde; her eyes were green; her mouth was like a red cherry.

One day, when the girl was walking outside her house, she heard a tinkling sound coming from her pond. Curiously, she walked toward the sound and found that it was a tiny gray duck. She lifted it up and gently touched its feathers which were smooth and icy. ”Help…help me,” a tiny sound came out of the duck’s mouth. “I…I’m sick, please help me!”
“How can I help you?” Mandarin asked.
“I…I need to get some colors, and they will bring me warm feelings; I…I’m freezing!” Mandarin wanted to help the little duck, but how? “Please…,” the poor duck said. Mandarin looked right into the duck’s eyes and was moved.
“I promise I will help you, no matter how long it takes!” she promised. Then she started to search for colors that could be given to the duck.

She looked everywhere, under the rocks, around the corners, and inside the mud. But everywhere she looked, there was only gray. She didn’t give up so easily. She bent down and kissed the river with her cherry lips and dipped her blonde hair into the water, trying to wash out her own colors, but nothing happened. Walking to every place in the kingdom, she hoped to see a tiny sign of brightness. Did she find it? No, she went back to the duck with her eyes red from crying.

The duck was still there, lying in the pond. “I am so sorry! I can’t find colors everywhere!” sobbed Mandarin. The duck just smiled bitterly; it had no strength left to speak. Mandarin lifted the duck up and held it against her chest. She felt her warm heart touching the duck’s icy body. She kept warming the duck, feeling its smooth feathers and the drops of rain. Wait, the drops of rain? She opened her eyes, and was just in time to see the most amazing thing in the world. Rain was falling and when the rain drops touch the ground, trees and flowers were starting to grow. What’s more, the rain drops started to change colors, from red to blue, blue to green. When Mandarin turned her attention back to the duck, she couldn’t believe her eyes! It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen! The duck’s feathers were full of different colors like a rainbow!
“I’m so grateful!” the duck cried and flapped its wings and shot into the sky. When it flew passed the trees, they turned from gray to green; when it flew passed the flowers, they shined in different colors too! Birds sang happy songs and water splashed while floating in the streams.

The Duck finally landed on Mandarin’s hands again.
Mandarin asked, “could you tell me your name?”

“I don’t have a name,” the duck replied, “Since you saved me, you can name me!” Then Mandarin closed her eyes and thought for a while.
“I’ll name you Mandarin,” She said dreamily.

From then on, came spring, summer and autumn. Mandarin and the duck lived happily in this beautiful place. And that’s why Mandarin ducks nowadays have so many colors and are the symbol of love.

Moral: If you help others, you’ll be happy too. J
