I made little effort in improving Tommy's pronunciation and intonation, but his pronunciation and intonation are better than I've expected. He not only acquired pronunciation and intonation from me, but also from DVD programs. That's why his pronunciation and intonation sounds so native.

I am the only one who help Tommy acquire English, while Chinese environment is already super strong. That's why I made extra effort in his English acquisition in his early years when he still sticks to the family instead of having more interaction with the others. This is the reason that his English took the lead at first. As a matter of fact, his Chinese has caught up when he has more interaction with people outside the family.

Learn more about bilinguism before you make any misleading comment.

I have two bilingual kids at home so how come my comments are misleading?

Do you have any idea there are no language classes allowed to be provided by non-native speakers in it in most counties? Do you know the reason? I bet you have never read anything about it. how come you jump to this big conclusion of "my son sounds so native"? Excuse me for living in a real world, okay?

Your devotion to your son's academic ability is precious but it does not mean you have a point to avoid your mother language between you and your child. What's your definition of family?  It is so sad to learn English as a Chinese in this way. Learning a foreign language is good for kids but it does not mean everything. English is just a language and an option and that's it. But mastering a mother language is much more than talking to someone else outside of family!

You are having your son miss a big part of real life, Mr. Crazy!

I am taking the approach of OPOL (One Parent, One Language). In my family, I only talk to my son in English, while my wife and my mother only talk to him in mandarin. This approach is widely accepted by experts and numerous families. My wife has read a lot of Chinese books to my son. Tommy's command of Chinese has always been more or less the same as his Chinese peers, and has never hindered him from iinteracting with other Chinese kids. His need for love, caring, knowledge, etc. are also satisfied by his mommy's Chinese words. Up to now, I don't see any disadvantages in my approach.

If you do want to offer a helping hand, I would appreciate it if you could provide persuasive analysis, evidence, solution, etc. insteading of giving plain assertion. I don't know what drove you to bark insulting words at me.

These are the octopus' suckers. The ones on the thick end are bigger. The ones on the thin tip are much smaller.” I don't want to eat suction cups!”

Trucks

大约读到一半时,骏骏忽然插话:“Daddy, I want to ask you a question.”我就停下朗读,问:“What is it?”
骏骏问:“Truck drivers learn to drive trucks in driving schools. But when there was no driving schools, how could they learn to drive?”我答道:“Long ago there were no driving schools. Whoever wanted to drive could learn from other truck drivers.”
But when there was no one who knew how to drive a truck, how could people learn?”
我略想了一下,答道:“When trucks were invented, engineers needed someone to try to drive it so as to find out whether it worked properly. That person would be the first driver. He would figure out how to drive it, and then taught others how to drive. He would also find out the problems in the truck, so that engineers could improve it.”
Oh, I see. The first driver was just like a test pilot.”

Do you know what to do if your nose bleeds when you are in the kindergarten?”
骏骏说:“Yes. I will press my nose, like this.”可能骏骏做了个按压鼻子的动作,但他坐在我后面,我看不到,于是提醒他:“You should press on the place where your mommy did.”
过了一会儿,想想还要跟他说为什么会流鼻血、为什么要按压鼻子:“The skin deep inside your nostril may break open. That's why your nose bleeds. You should press against the side of your nose to close that opening. Then something in your blood will accumulate at the opening to stop the bleeding. If you feel it hard to breathe when you are pressing your nose, you can open your mouth to breathe.”
If your nose bleeds, you should press against this place. Do not let go, and go to tell your teacher. She will help you, or take you to see the doctor.”
I will. Bye-bye, daddy.”
