2007 - December Age : 19 months

Learning Chinese & Japanese is hard for me.. but it is so much easier for my little girl.
She has learn how to sing in French, German, Japanese and reading Chinese. Her daddy & I suspects that she is learning how to sing in Korean & Russian too. English is her mother tongue , because of her daddy. She reads more than 200 to 500 words to date. Sees about close to 1000 flashcards everyday.

She is currently forming words in 3 for a sentence and sometimes even more than that. She does alot of sign language with us, we discovered that she speaks even earlier when we signs with her even more. Just for your knowledge sign language is free online to be learn is you want to learn American Sign Language. We also shown her English words printed out on an
A4 size with at least 120 size fonts. Behind each cards, it is written the sign language for the word. Eventhough it maybe hard for her to say, but everytime we shown her the word, she would sign back the meaning of the words on the cards. So we know for a fact that she knows the words itself.

It is not necessary that the child needs to understand the meaning behind each word we show, but as long as they learn, it is a natural process for the child to come understand. In fact, they will find out. The funny thing about learning the language, they learn the pattern as well...

I definitely recommend books by Tony Buzan books. Everything he published can be taught to your child.

You said that it's hard for you to learn Chinese, but you can find this website, it's very great for you. Ha ha...

My daughter also 19mths on Dec(11th), but your teaching is very great. She really a super baby can talk a lot and do more signs.

Finally, may I know where are you from? Your mother tongue is English, right? Hope to learn form you more!

P.S.: I hope you can understand what I mean and forgive my poor English?

Thank you. Glad to help. yes my mother tongue is English. Though I am a Chinese, only speak Cantonese, I cannot read, but I am learning with my daughter,  Haha sad to say.

I read a lot of IT stuff, though I am not into IT. I read that baidu.com the number 1 search engine in China. I took a gamble and started typing English words especially Child education stuff. So that is how I found out. I use google, to do the translation for me or use babelfish.altavista.com to do the translation, sometimes it make sense , other times it doesn't.

Sarah just finish reading words  - surprise, excited, brave, calm, etc..
Chinese words -- I think she learnt how to read " bounce the ball" ..counts in Chinese. She is able to sing in Chinese too.
She is really good at learning.

Never underestimate the child's ability to understand or even learn, I found that very quickly...she learns patterns
If the show finish, she would say " THE END" even though we never thought her the word. Because the show say "THE END" . So every video show she watchs, she says " THE END" when it is finish.

NO TV Time for her.. usually. But she was sick a couple of days, so TV was her best friend the last couple of days.  I think everyone is a great parent...I use to wake up around 5am to do some of her education stuff. She begs us to teach her everyday, ask us what is the sign language for certain things or words for the particular item, expression, etc..

Her inquisitiveness is intense.. which is great, but I have to keep up with her all the time

My experience on teaching the child in English or even Chinese

As for English :

It is recommended you use a red color "ALL SMALL CAPITAL LETTERS"

that means the word "Apple" cannot be written as " Apple" but rather as "apple"
If you are using an A4 size glossy paper ...print it as 120 size fonts

Be careful, if you are printing a set of words, make sure they are all the same size fonts.
The children recognized words as patterns. Unless your child is already 5 years old, therefore it is required that they learn the spelling as well.

The child is very intelligent or a genius, therefore, a pattern which is slightly different, they will recognized it


As for Chinese. The pattern font 120 size fonts. Again start with red.
Gradually introduce it into black. Start with 3 words in the begining. Show it for like 3 seconds for each word. Once you do this for 5 days continuous, introduce another set of 3 words.

If it is too hard for you to remember, just do it for like one week and change out the whole 3 words and introduce the new ones. Not recommended that you test them at all.

If they do read it to you.. that mean you have successfully done so. Always expect them to know. If you don't expect them to know -- you are sending them a signal that they are not intelligent.

You can add as many words at the pace of the child. Remember, they set the pace, NOT YOU.
Again, I am NO expert here... all the parents here knows more about teaching their children Chinese than I am.


Math :

If you do math, start with dots. Of course it is easy. BUT here is the trick. DO the physical counting i.e. like counting cookies on the table. It is very important it has a correlation btw the physical and whatever they learn on paper, whether it is words or math or science or a foreign language.

If you teach the child the foreign language it is expected of you to LEARN the language itself too.

Whatever you teach, please double check the answers, the spelling, the facts. Otherwise, it is very very hard to rectify the errors -- verified by Tony Buzan.

Today she says " this one! this one!" pointing to her book. She has been saying about 4 months ago. Ever since we asked her" which one do you want?" " is it this one?" or " this one"??

Her answer " thisone! thisone!" -- yup super fast when she said it. We have to catch her saying it.
She also love to listen to the .. of course, having a fake phone -- is not the same as having mommy's or daddy's phone.
She imitates us by saying " hello! -- haha hahaha bye!"  Most of our conversation has some laughter and say bye very quickly after that.
