10 Best Budgeting and Personal Finance Apps
By NOVEMBER 20, 2014 11:00 AM
Stay in Budget!

We all mean well when we plan out a budget, but without discipline, impulse control, diligent logging of your income and expenses -- and a keen awareness of how much you can afford to spend -- you'll be hemorrhaging money in no time. Fortunately, whether you're a high-flyer that needs to maintain an expense report or a student looking to scrimp and save, there are apps that can help you easily set a budget and log your expenses on the go. Here are 10 of our favorite budgeting and personal finance apps.

Level Money (Android, iOS) (Free)

For free, simple to use budget tracking, check out Level Money (AndroidiOS), a low-frills budget tool that syncs with your bank and credit card accounts in order to quickly display how much money you can afford to spend today, this week, and this month. After linking accounts to the app, Level Money estimates your income, identifies your bill expenses, and then asks you to set a percentage of income as savings. After that, Level Money then displays how much money you can afford to spend for the day, week and month in an easy infographic. Its simplicity also means a certain lack of flexibility, as seen in its lack of categorization and its poor handling of cash expenses.

You Need A Budget (Android, iOS) (Free)

You Need A Budget is a popular budgeting and personal finance tool for desktop computers, and itsAndroid and iOS companion apps add impressive mobile functionality to an already powerful package. The YNAB mobile app allows users to synch their budget information across desktop and mobile, quickly input new transactions on the go, view how much of your spending budget is still available across a variety of categories, and view your historical transaction data. As these are companion apps, they do require the desktop version, which you can download for trial here.

BUDGT ($.99) (iOS)

BUDGT is a lean, mean, budgeting machine. A lightweight app with a clean visual design, BUDGT focuses on hard and fast budgeting and expense tracking. Create and manage a monthly budget with income and recurring expenses, and then enter your own categories that can be displayed in colorful expense charts. Clean screens, bold fonts and pie charts make it easy to input and track your expenses. It might not have all the features of other apps, but BUDGT is a great choice for those with simple needs.

Spendee ($1.99) (Android, iOS)

Another nicely designed budget and expense app, Spendee (AndroidiOS) features a flat, brightly colored, and easily navigable UI. Expenses are quickly logged into different categories, with the option to snap photos of bills and receipts for easy storage. The Feed tab lets you easily scroll through your expenses, while the Overview mode offers useful infographics on your spending over time, as well as a breakdown of what items and categories you're spending your money on.

Expense Manager (Free) (Android)

Expense Manager by Markus Hintersteiner is a bare bones budgeting and expense logging Android app that lets users create a budget (including custom budget categories) and quickly input expenses. The app's home page provides a display of total expenses this month as well as the amount remaining before you hit your budget cap, as well as a searchable history of expenses. Some features, such as a pie-chart distribution of expenses, statistics over time and income management, are only available as an in-app purchase.

One Touch Expenser (Free) (Android)

Keep track of your budget, income and expenses with One Touch Expenser, an Android expense tracking app that lets you keep a neat account of your monthly expenses. Set a budget that's divided into categories such as food, healthcare or entertainment, and then input and categorize your expenses with reminders and charts tracking your expenditures over time. Helpful widgets let you quickly input expenses, photograph receipts for later filing or set reminders for particular expenses such as bills and utilities.

Goodbudget (Android, iOS) (Free)

Goodbudget (AndroidiOS) (formerly EEBA, the Easy Envelope Budget Aid) uses a simple principle to quickly help you categorize and track your spending: "envelope budgeting." Users divide their estimated income into categorized budget "envelopes" such as groceries, entertainment, gas and utilities. Then, as users record their expenses, they are categorized into the relevant envelope, where cash is taken out. The free version of the app allows users to create 10 custom "envelopes," while premium subscriptions allow users to create unlimited envelopes and sync their budget across five devices.

Toshl Finance (Free) (Android, iOS)

Toshl Finance (AndroidiOS) puts a cute face on your budget tracker with cartoonish monsters that keep you company while you set your budget and track your expenses. After setting up a Toshl account, you can create your own custom, tagged budget (one-time, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly). Quick expense entry, repeat expenses for bills, and exportable expense reports make for a simple but powerful expense logging tool. Additionally, your data syncs to your Toshl account, letting you manage your money across devices or on your desktop.

Mint.com Personal Finance (Free) (Android, iOS)

Users looking for a budgeting app and then some would do well to check out Intuit's Mint Personal Finance (Android, iOS). The app not only helps you track your income and expenses, but also your financial state as a whole. Besides allowing for in-depth personal budget management and expense logging, the Mint app lets you sync your bank and card details for an up-to-date and secure look at your financial state. It's overkill if all you're looking for is a little help with simple budgeting, but Mint Personal Finance is great if you're looking for more features.

Concur (iOS, Android) (Free, requires Concur account)

Organizations signed up to Concur Technologies' expense management services can take advantage of the excellent Concur (AndroidiOS) mobile apps in order to record, sort and keep track of business travel expenses, removing the pain from creating expense reports. Plan trips (including TripIt integration), record expenses, photograph receipts, enter itemized hotel charges, and submit or approve expense reports from within the app. This app was definitely built with the business traveler in mind.
