You wrote that you do not know where to start with your 5 year old. Your first focus will be two things.
1. You want to start developing ear training by playing "Slow word/ Fast word. The most important skill for a beginner is learning hot to break words apart and blend them back together. You can start playing with this without showing the word. You just say the word stretched out /m-o-m/. Teach her to say the sounds together fast and discover the word. When she says this one, she can get a special hug. You can then sound out /h-u-g/ and give her yet another one. This is describes in Step 2, Prep the Senses.
2. The next most important thing to do as a foundation is to teach her the phonograms. For a very young child, this can also be done by sound only. I used to pay a recording for my newborn. You daughter is old enough to give her stronger interaction. Teach her to shape the phonogram as she says the sound or sounds that it makes. Start by doing this with big motor skills like you see Britta doing on the DVD, "You Can Do It!"
The phonograms are the base for both spelling and reading. You need to alternate reviewing them for both skills. For spelling we say the sounds without showing the card and have the student echo the sounds and shape the phonogram. For reading we show the card and have the student say the sound(s).
As soon as your daughter has a working knowledge of the basic, single letter alphabet, you want to present the Consonant /Vowel page. This gives her the big picture of how the phonograms work. It sets the stage for you to introduce her to actual spelling dictation.
There is a reason that you have kept coming back to SWR over the years. It is the most natural way to teach a student. It starts with what is needed most, when it is needed and it builds progressively on that foundation all the way to 12th grade spelling.
There is also a reason that you have felt inadequate. For most adults this is a new approach. It is not the old well worn shoe. It is better for the student, but harder for the teacher to comprehend until she just jumps in and starts doing it. While you are doing these beginning steps with your five year old, you can work ahead building your sample learning log. This will help you experience what you will be doing.
If you would share the town where you live, there may be someone here who could come along side to guide you in these early days with the program. You may also be able to attend a teacher training class. They are just starting to form for the new year. Most classes are in the summer, but when there is interest in an area, they can come together throughout the year.
I'm glad that you want the best education for your children and that you are open to learn something different that will help make that possible. I had the same attitude and the Lord honored that over and above anything that I could have imagined. The overflow has been that many other teachers around the world have been helped.
Blessings,
