What we did today:

1. My bible story lesson 3: The first Sabbath—Sarah drew the Sabbath day, wrote the memory verse and week day song.

2. Helped with cooking: cutting broccoli, baking bread sticks, making won-ton

3. Japanese origami: deer, building, tree, grass, sun, star, watermelon, etc. We pasted them on construction paper to make a picture.

4. Study Awana club book lesson 4. The level 2 exercise was to point out all the light source around us. We found about 30 light sources including: sun, moon, star, flashlight, lamp, candle, streetlight, kerosene lamp, oil lamp, match, florurecent light, fireplace, firework, firefly, glowing stick at night, Christmas light, traffic light, spotlight, car headlights, blinking light, night light, airplane light, lantern, stove fire, comet.

Sarah’s 1st Gym class with City Recreation Department.

October 27th, 2005, Thursday

We started “sprouting” today. I chosed lentil, wheat berry, mung bean and red bean. The method we used was from C:\Documents and Settings\swang\Desktop\Home school\science\sprouting.htm:
What You Need

A.        A jar, 1 liter to 4 liter (1qt. to gallon) size, depending on your appetite for sprouts and size of your family.
B.        A bowl of the right size and weight to prop up the jar.
C.        Some screen or netting and a rubber band, either nylon tulle from a fabric shop or gray fiberglass screen from a hardware store, will work fine.
D.        Fresh water.
E.        Seeds with good germination, preferably grown organically. Avoid purchased garden seeds unless you know they aren't treated. Most natural food stores have the common sprouting seeds; if in doubt, ask if it's organic. If you know a farmer who grows the seeds you want without chemicals, buy in bulk. Most seeds keep for a year or more in a cool dry place.
(You can also use a home sprouting device, such as the SproutMASTER tm. Follow the directions that come with the device. )
Easy Sprouting Directions (for most small seeds)

A.        Soak Put 1 to 4 TBS. seed in a wide mouth jar. Cover with mesh and secure with rubber band. Add water, swirl, and drain. Add 1 cup cool water and soak for 4 - 8 hrs.
B.        Rinse Twice a day, refill jar with cool water, swirl, and drain. Invert jar and prop at angle in sink or bowl.
C.        Enjoy In three to six days, when sprouts are 3 to 5cm (1 to 2") long, enjoy. Cover the jar with plastic and a rubber band, or transfer to a covered container, and refrigerate to store.
Hints and Options for small seeds
You can grow alfalfa, red clover, radish, fenugreek, and other small seeds up to 4cm (1.5") long. A 250g bag of alfalfa seed can grow 45 cups of sprouts, or even more. Lentils and peas are best small, with sprouts .5 to 1cm(1/4 to 1/2") long. They get tougher with more growth. Miss a rinsing? Just continue normally if the sprouts appear alive and show no signs of mold. The sprouts should be fine. If you do see a spot of mold or rot, remove it with a good margin of healthy sprouts and discard. Don't mistake the fuzzy white root hairs of radish, canola, mustards, and other crucifers for mold. Be sure to taste sprouts as you go along; use them when you like them. To green up sprouts, leave them without a cover for a few hours in bright light, but not direct sunlight. Sprouts grow best between 18C and 25C (65F and 75F). Use luke-warm water for soaking and rinsing in cool room temperatures, and cold water in hot room temperatures. Drain the sprouts well before they go in the fridge. Rinse in the morning, cover and refrigerate in the afternoon. Mung beans (for Chinese bean sprouts) grow best in a drainable tray or basket. They like extra rinsing, and are best grown in complete darkness to prevent bitterness.
Soil Sprouting
Soil sprouting can be used to produce lettuce-like buckwheat greens or pea shoots, crunchy sunflower greens, or chlorophyll rich wheat or barley grass.
A.        Fill pots, trays, or other containers (with drainage) 1/2 to 2/3 full of soil, compost, or potting mix. Ensure that the growing medium doesn't contain artificial fertilizers or chemicals.
B.        Soak wheat 8 hr., buckwheat or sunflowers 12-18 hr., and spread on the soil surface just touching. Water the soil well and cover with plastic. Leave one side slightly loose for ventilation.
C.        Mist or sprinkle daily; uncover after three days.
D.        Put the container(s) in sunlight or bright light for 5-8 days, until the crop is 5-6" tall. Keep growing medium moist.
E.        Cut as needed, but before plants become too old and tough.

We also organized Saxon Math materials, we put the calendar on the wall and reviewed the days of the week and started to put the date card on the calendar for the month of October, 2005 and learned today is October 27th, 2005, Thursday. I will make the calendar bilingual in English and Chinese.

My bible story Lesson 4: We can choose—Sarah drew Adam and Eve were attempted by the serpent to eat the forbidden fruit and I wrote down the memory verse for the lesson.

Corduroy

October 28th, 2005, Friday

Today is cleaning day. Sarah and I cleaned the backyard. We pulled the weeds, pulled the spring flowers in front of the fountain, cleaned the vegetable bed and leveled the soil for future planting, transferred the chive from outdoor to indoor in a pot. While we were working with the soil, we found many earth worms. I told Sarah if we cut the earthworm in half, it will still live. Sarah asked me to cut it so she can see. I did not dare to do it. I asked sarah to do it, she did not dare either. So we left the earthworm alone. We also noticed there were many whitish semi-transparent bugs inside the soil. I need to research to find out what are they. In the afternoon, we went to home depot to pick up the materials for installing a dripping system for our backyard and some fall flowers for the front of the fountain.

2nd day for the “sprouting”: Mung bean, lentil and wheat berry started to sprout. Red bean did not sprout yet.

Put date card “28” on the calendar and learned today is October 28th, 2005, Friday.

I received “Honey for the child’s heart” (has an extensive reading list) and “For children’s sake” (Charlotte Mason view of education, almost like the Christian version of Montessori) .

October 31st, 2005, Monday

We studied Awana Cubbie Bear book Lesson 5 in the morning. The under the apple tree project required us to study a new animal. We looked up the “your big backyard” magazine and found an article about “Red crab”. We researched on the internet and found the information on where they reside, what they eat, what color they are and their unique characteristics.

We learned from the calendar that today is October 31st, 2005, Monday. Sarah played with multilink.

Sarah and Jimmy were in the backyard digging bugs from the soil for about an hour in the afternoon. They found some earthworms and that unknown c-shaped whitish bugs. We finally looked up on the internet and found that these c-shaped whitish bugs are called grubs. They are the larvae forms of adult beetles. They feed on the plant roots.

Today we harvested some garlic sprouts and sprinkled them on scrambled eggs, rice, etc. The kids and I love it. Now we have basil, chive and garlic sprout growing at our window garden. I am planning to grow some more sprouts, like mung bean sprouts for consuming.

Today is the 4th day of lentil sprouting. The sprout was about 0.5 inch long. According to instruction, it is the right length for consumption. The kids and I tasted a few raw sprouts, it was crunchy and a little sweet.

In the afternoon during the quiet time, we read “My big backyard” magazine. One of the article was about why after duck dipped into water, its feather is still dry. We did an experiment: we cut out two feathers using construction paper. We sprayed cooking oil on one paper feather and let the oil to soak in and left the other paper feather alone. Then we dropped a few drops of water on both feathers. We saw that the oiled paper feather stayed dry and the other paper feather absorbed water and became wet.
