Q. How do we think to spell the British way of saying "either" or "neither" as the "ei" would sound /I/ instead of the American /E/ ?

A. See SWR page 186 point c. EI saying /I/ traces to German words that have not been adapted to English norms. Noah Webster in the 1828 clearly marks it as /E/ in both "either" or "neither." This may have been a change that he introduced into American English.
