“我身边的数学”是一套从英国引进的极为有趣的数学科普画册，它对于有特殊爱好（如喜欢赛车、飞机、极限运动、侦探故事等）的小读者有莫大的吸引力，在引发趣味的同时又极富挑战性，没有一定的数学基础、没有爱动脑爱钻研的精神也难以过关。它特别适合小学中高年级以上的读者，如果更低龄的读者想要阅读，则需要特殊的兴趣给予支撑，否则会相当困难。
这套书的编排构成极富创意，令人钦佩。以《巧破迷案》为例，撰写这本书的团队由一位儿童读物作家、一位数学科普作家、一位犯罪现场勘查员兼法学院高级讲师、一位法医学博士等4人组成。书的开篇描述了一个盗窃疑案，失窃了什么？谁干的？怎样才能找回失窃的财宝？——解答这些问题不是靠凭空想象，而是要进行有条不紊的严谨工作，从现场勘查开始，获得蛛丝马迹的线索，并调查相关的人员，运用科技手段进行实验，然后就是最重要的——运用数学的方法进行计算、比较、逻辑推理，最终找到答案！
这样激动人心的书同样适合大人阅读。
