一、 The fight at school

“Nick, you don’t listen,” Mrs. Moore said. “You can be a good student, but…”

But Nick wasn’t listening. “I’m late,” he thought, “I only have fifteen minutes to get to lunch.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Moore,” Nick said. “Oh, excuse me, but I have to go.” And he ran to get his lunch.

Nick found a table and sat down with his tray of food. He ate fast. He ate his lunch, took his tray, and walked across the room--- fast. Fred Johnson had sandwiches, milk, and cake on his tray. But Nick didn’t look at Fred’s tray.

Nick looked around. Fred’s sandwiches were on the floor. The cake and milk were on Fred. So Fred and Nick started fighting.

The fight didn’t last long, because just then Mr. Harrison walked into the room.

“Nick, Fred,” Mr. Harrison said. “I want to see you both in my office.”

Out of School

Nick waited at the door to Mr. Harrison’s office. Fred was in the office, but the door was closed. What were they saying? Nick didn’t know. In a few minutes, Fred came out. “You’re out.” Fred said. He looked angry.

Nick went in and sat down. “Well, Nick,” Mr. Harrison said, “What happened today? Can you tell me?”

“My arm hit Fred’s try. I didn’t start the fight.” Nick said.

Mr. Harrison listened. Then he spoke in a quiet voice. “Nick, what can I say to you? You were in fights three times last week. And today you were in a fight.”

    “But I just---”

“Nick,” Mr. Harrison said, “think about other people sometimes. How do they feel? Do you ever ask them? I don’t think you care about other people.”

Mr. Harrison got some papers. He looked at them for a minute. Then he gave them to Nick.

“Ask your mother or father to read these,” Mr. Harrison said. “Tell them that you’ll be out of school for the next two days.”

“Out of school!” Nick said, “But… ”

“Nick, take this time to think. You have to care about other people,” Mr. Harrison said, “When you come back, I hope to see a change.”

Nick took the papers and left. “What am I going to tell my mother and father?” Nick thought. He walked to the train station. He got to the station. The train got there at the same time. Nick paid his money and ran to get on the train. “I know this train is going home,” he thought, “But I don’t want to go home.”

On the Train

Only a few people were on the train. Nick found a seat near the window. The train began to move. Nick looked out at the city. He needed to think.

But it was hard to think. A man and a woman in the seat behind him were talking. A man and a woman in the seat behind him were talking about money. They were a husband and wife, and they were talking about thing to buy for their new home.

Nick didn’t want to listen. “What am I going to say to my father?” he thought.

At the next stop, a man in a black coat got on the train. He looked at the books on the seat next to Nick.

“Young people,” the man said, “They take two or three seats. Other people can just stand up. Young people don’t care.” The man walked to the other end of the train.

At the Clark Street stop, a girl got on. When he saw her, Nick moved his books. She sat next to him. “Hello.” Nick said. The girl didn’t answer. She got up and found another seat.

“This is just not my day,” Nick thought. He looked out the window again. Another person sat down next to him. Nick didn’t even turn to look.

Then a voice said, “Excuse me, do you know the time?”

Nick looked around. The woman next to him was looking at him.

Nick looked at his watch. “One-thirty,” he said.

“Thanks,” the woman said, “Are you people out of school today?”

“Just this person,” Nick said, “Just Nick Lopez. No one but me.”

“Oh?” the woman said, “What happened?”

Nick told her the story. The woman listened. “It’s too bad,” she said, “I don’t think---”

CRASH! The train stopped. Then the train turned over.

A Voice from the Radio

It was quiet afternoon at Mr. Lopez’s store. Mrs. Lopez was working in the back room. Mr. Lopez was cleaning the store. There was music on the radio. Then the music stopped, and a voice came from the radio.

“A train accident near Vine Street killed six people. The accident happened at 2:05 this afternoon. Two trains hit one another near the Vine Street station.

“More than twenty doctors and nurses are working at the place of the accident. Many people are still in the train, and firefighters are trying to get them out now. Many cars from the train turned over.

“We do not know why the accident happened. So far we have no names of any people on the trains. We will have more for you at 2:30.”

Mrs. Lopez turned off the radio. “I feel sorry for those people,” she said, “It’s good that Nick is in school. Nick takes the train at the Vine street station. He’ll be late today.”

The Accident

The woman next to Nick fell out of her seat. Then the roof fell in. There was no time to think. There was no place to run. People were falling down. Nick fell from one side of the car to the other. The lights went off. Then they went on again. Nick’s back hit the floor.

The train stopped at last. For a second there was no sound. Then Nick heard people. They were calling for help.

Nick was on something hard. But it wasn’t the floor. It was a window. Then train was on its side. Nick tried to move, but something was holding him down. His leg was trapped. He tried to pull his leg free. His leg hurt very badly. He wanted help. But he knew that other people needed help more.

Nick looked for the woman who was sitting next to him. “Where is she?” Nick thought.

Nick pulled his leg out. His leg still hurt, but at last it was free. He looked around. There were pieces of metal around him. The seats were out of the floor. Parts of the windows were on the floor.

Nick could move around, but the other people couldn’t. They were trapped under seats or large pieces of metal. “These people need help,” he thought, “and they need it right now! What am I going to do?”

The Phone Call
There was a telephone call at the store. “Hello.” Mrs. Lopez answered. “Hello, Mrs. Lopez. This is Mr. Harrison at Nick’s school.” “Yes, Mr. Harrison. What can I do for you?”

“I just wanted to ask about those papers,” Mr. Harrison said, “They are important. Did Nick tell you ”

“Nick isn’t home. He’s at school!” Mrs. Lopez answered. “But I sent Nick home this afternoon.” Mr. Harrison said.

“Oh no!” Mrs. Lopez cried, “What time did he leave school?” “About 1:15,” Mr. Harrison answered, “Why?”

“There was a very bad train accident,” Mrs. Lopez answered, “Nick takes that train home from school.”

Mrs. Lopez put down the telephone and put on her coat. Then she and Mr. Lopez closed the store and ran to the train station.

“Oh please, let Nick be OK.” They both thought. Then they ran down the street.

Helping

Nick started to move around the car. He saw the man in the black coat. The man was lying near him. The man had a bad cut on his arm. “I can stop that bleeding,” Nick said. He took off the man’s coat. Then he put his hand hard against the man’s arm. He held up the arm. Soon the man’s arm stopped bleeding.

“Thanks,” the man said, “I can help you with the other people here.” “No, it’s OK,” Nick said, “People are coming to help us.”

Nick moved on. His leg was hurting more, but he knew he had to help. He saw the girl near him. She was trapped between two seats. He walked over to her. Nick put his hand on her head.

“Lie still,” he said, “Don’t move. It will only hurt more. Help will be here soon.” The girl looked at him. Then she closed her eyes and lay still.

Nick heard a sound behind him. It was the man who was talking with his wife. The man was calling his wife’s name. Nick went to him. The man was very cold. Nick took off his jacket and covered the man with it. He tried to talk to the man. But the man didn’t hear him.

Nick’s leg was hurting badly again. “Only a few more people,” Nick thought. He went to the man’s wife. She was trapped under a long piece of metal. Nick found a jacket. He put it under her head. Nick spoke to the woman. “It’s OK,” he said, “Help is coming.”

The woman said, “How is Dave?” “He’s OK,” Nick said, “Your husband is fine.”

Nick still did not see the woman who was sitting next to him. Then he heard a sound. It came from behind a large piece of metal. “Oh no,” Nick thought, “She must be under there. How can I get her out?”

The Rescue Unit

Doug Watson answered the telephone in his desk. “Rescue Unit.” He said. “Doug, this is Tim Davis. Get ready. There’s a train wreck at the Vine Street station.” “Bad?” Doug asked.

“It’s very bad, there are ten cars in the accident. We’ll have to cut the cars open. It’s the only way we can get the people out. And we won’t have much to work.”

“Tim, is there a fire?” Doug asked. “No fire yet, but we’re sending firefighters to the station. There are also five ambulances. I know we need more.”

“OK, Tim,” Doug said. “The Rescue Unit will be there in five minutes.”

Doug put down the phone. He made another call. “Let’s go, Charlie,” he said. “There’s a train wreck at Vine Street. The Rescue Unit is going to help. We have to be ready in two minute.” “OK, Doug,” Charlie said. “We’ll be there.”

Doug put down the phone and stood up. He took a small radio from the desk. Then he took a jacket that said “Rescue Unit” on the back. He put the jacket on. He could hear the sounds of feet. Then people in the Rescue Unit were running to their truck. They were ready. They could get to the train station in five minutes. They had to get there before a fire started.

“It will be bad of there’s a fire,” Doug thought. He looked at a picture on the desk. It was a picture of his wife and little girl. He turned to the door.

“Thirty seconds,” he thought. “I can be on the truck in thirty seconds.”

He ran out of the room and closed the door behind him.

Cutting Through

Suddenly Nick heard something. He heard sounds and voices. Nick called, “Help! We need help in here!” What was happening? Nick didn’t know. He took a piece of metal and hit the side of the car again and again.

Then a voice called, “Are people in there?” “Yes!” Nick called back. “Some people in here need help right now!”

“OK,” the voice called. “I have a blowtorch. We can cut our way into the car. Stand back.”

Nick moved out of the way. In a few minutes there was a large hole into the train. Nick helped them. They found the trapped people. They worked fast. Doug used his blowtorch to free some people. They moved large pieces of metal away from other people.

Nurses and doctors came to help the people in the train. They carried some people out. Ambulances waited to take the people to hospitals. Nick saw the lights of the ambulances through the hole in the roof.

The last person they took out was the girl. It took a long time to free her from between the seats.

“Well, the bad part is over,” Doug told Nick. “Now we can put you in an ambulance and drive
you to the hospital.”

“But there’s one more person!” Nick said. “A woman was sitting next to me. I think she’s under there.” He pointed to the place where the root fell in.

Doug and Charlie worked. They cut into the metal with blowtorches. They made sure no more metal fell on the woman. Nick tried not to think about his leg. He just talked. He told the woman about his family. He told her about their store. He told her about his fight at school. Every few minutes he stopped. “Are you OK in there?” he called out. Every time there was a sound. Then…

Nick and the woman went together in the ambulance. Nick was at the hospital. He felt tired and weak. “I talked for hours,” he thought. “But what did I talk about? I can’t remember.”

The next day, this story was in the newspaper:

It took three hours to free Mildred Day, 38, from a train car at the Vine Street station. Mrs. Day was trapped in the train car after the roof fell in on her.

Nick Lopez, 16, was also in the train car. “Nick talked to her for three hours,” one firefighter said. “He helped her a lot.”

Mrs. Day is now in City hospital. She will have to stay in the hospital for three weeks. Doctors say she will be fine in a few months.

Mr. and Mrs. Lopez said, “We are very happy that Nick is OK. We are very pleased that he helped so many people.”

TRAIN WRECK
Sandra McCandless Simons
Jingran Geng

五、The Accident
