The Giver
Chapter One:
The sense of his own community silent, had made his stomach turn. (This sentence tells me how frightened Jonas was, how frightened the hole community were at that time.)
But there was a little shudder of nervousness whenhe thought about it, about that might happen. (Though I do not know what is gonna happen, but I know it is quite important for Jonas, maybe even for his hole life.)
”I feel frightened, too, for him,”she confessed.”You know that there’s no third chance. The rules say that if there’s a third transgression, he simply has to be released.” (From this sentence, I know mother is a sympathetic, kind-hearted person.)
Lily stood up and went to her mother. She stroked her mother’s arm.
From his place at the table, Father reached over and took her hand. Jonas reached for another.
One by one, they comforted her. Soon she smiled, thanked them, and murmured that she felt soothed.
(From the above description, I find out this family is united, they are friendly to each other, kind to each other.)
Lily looked up, her eyes wide. ”The Ceremony of Twelve,”she whispered in an awed voice. Even the smallest children--Lily’s age and younger--knew that it lay in the future of each of them.
”I ‘m glad you told us your feelings,”Father said.
”Lily,”Mother said, beckoning to the little girl,”go on now and get your nightclothes. Father and I are going to stay here and talk to Jonas for a while.”
Lily sighed, but obediently she got down from her chair. ”Privately?” She asked.
Mother nodded.”Yes,she said,”this talk will be private one with Jonas.”
(According to the paragraph above, I felt more and more confused, what is that ‘The Ceremony of Twelve’?Why is it so important?)

Chapter Two:
“As a matter of fact,” he went on,”I feel a little guilty about this. But I did go in this afternoon and looked to see if this year’s Naming list had been made yet. I t was right there in the office, and I looked up number Thirty-six--that’s the little guy I’ve concerned about--because it occurred to me that it might enhance his nurturing if I could call him by a name. Just privately, of course, when no one else is around.”
“Did you find it?”Jonas asked. He was fascinated. It didn’t seem a terribly important rule, but the fact that his father had broken a rule at all awed him. He glanced at his mother, the one responsible for adherence to the rules, and was relieved that she was smiling.
His father nodded. “His name--if he makes it to the Naming without being released, of course--is to be Gabriel. So I whisper that to him when I feed him every four hours, and during exercise and playtime. If no one can hear me.
“I call him Gabe, actually,” he said, and grinned.
(Father had broken a rule, for a boy that would possibly be released, from that I know that father like the little boy very much.)
“Did everyone applaud, even though they weren’t surprised?”Jonas asked.
“Oh, of course. They were happy for me, that my Assignment was what I wanted most. I felt very fortunate.” His father smiled.
(This paragraph shows that the people in this community is united, they are happy for the lucky ones, so they will be sad for the unlucky ones.)
“I worry a little about Asher’s Assignment,” Jonas confessed. “Asher’s such fun. But he doesn’t really have any serious interests. He makes a game out of everything.”
(From Jonas’s speaking, I notice that Jonas is a person that treasures friendship, he thinks about his friend at any time.)
Jonas and his mother rolled their eyes, yet they watched affectionately as Lily and her father headed to her sleeping-room with the stuffed elephant that had been given to her as her comfort object when she was born.
(The people in this community love children very much, they give every children a comfort object, they are very kind to children, and every children’s treatment is equal)

He went to his desk, pretending not to be interested in the new child. On the other side of the room, Mother and Lily are bending over to watch as Father unwrapped its blanket.
(This paragraph shows everyone in the family is interested in the child Gabe, and they all like him.)
Everyone would have known, he remembered with humiliation, that the announcement ATTENTION. THIS IS A REMINDER TO MALE ELEVENS THAT OBJECTS ARE NOT TO BE REMOVED FROM THE RECRETION AREA AND THAT SNACKS ARE TO BE EATEN, NOT HOARED had been specifically directed at him, the day last month that he had taken an apple home.
(From this I see that Jonas is a naughty boy)
But suddenly Jonas had noticed, following the path of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit in the midair had--well, this was the part that he couldn’t adequately understand--the apple had changed.
(Jonas is a boy that is good at observation)

The Giver
Chapter One:
Squinting toward the sky, he had seen the sleek jet, almost a blur at in high speed, go past, and a second later heard the blast of sound that followed.(This sentence made me know why Jonas what frightened means at the beginning.)
Then one more time, a moment later, from the opposite direction, the same plane. (Although this sentence is simple, it showed the sense of the tragedy.)
The sense of his own community silent, waiting, had made his stomach chum.(The adjectives and verbs made the sentence lively.)
Now, thinking about the feeling of fear as he pedaled home along the river path, he remembered that moment of palpable, stomach-sinking terror when the aircraft had streaked above. It was not what he was feeling now with December approaching. He searched for the right word to describe his own feeling. (This paragraph shows that the writer has already ended the description of the reason of Jonas’s frighten, and he is going to start another stay.)
Asher, who talked too fast and mixed things up, scrambling words and phrases until they were barely recognizable and often very funny.(This shows that Asher is a funny, friendly and easygoing person.)
Lily's feelings were always straightforward, fairly simple, usually easy to resolve.(This sentence tells us the character of Lily.)
Mother murmured sympathetically. Jonas and Lily both nodded sympathetically as well.(These two sentences show that the family is really kind and full of love in their hearts.)
"Yes," she said, "this talk will be a private one with Jonas." (This lets me know that the next chapter will be about a conversation Jonas’s ceremony of twelve.)

书名:The Giver
章节:Chapter 1
日期:2013,6,26
I like this book the first time I read it. It’s by Lois Lowry, one of my favorite writers.
“It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened.” This is the first line of the book. I like to judge a book by its first line, and this gave (我建议用gives,一般现在时) me great curiosity, so I continued (continues) on with reading.
The first chapter talks about a boy named Jonas.
Jonas was once frightened a year ago when an unidentified aircraft had overflown the community. It was against the rules for pilots to fly over the community. The final decision for him was a release from the community, which frightened Jonas.
That night, Jonas felt complicated, so he wasn’t eager to share his feelings at the evening telling of feelings, one of the rituals.
From their family telling , I feel that the people in this book lived in a different world from ours. In that world, there were communities, each with their own rules. One must obey the rules, otherwise, he would be released from the community, which was a terrible punishment for them.
When I finish reading the first chapter, I give a long sigh. I am beginning to feel that this book will be very interesting.

Giver
--The cover
My first impression of the cover is one word: strange. It’s almost as if a corner of the cover is torn off. The part on the right side shows an old man with wrinkles and extremely long beard with tears in his eyes. The man is colorless. On the left side, I can catch a glimpse flames lapping at the air and swallowing up the whole forest. The flames are bright red and orange while the trees are burned black.
This discovery makes me wonder, why does the illustrator split the cover into two parts, and why does one part has bright colors while the other does not? Those two parts are so different that they’re like two separated worlds.
The thing that attracts me the most is the old man’s eyes, so exhausted, so painful while still holding the tiniest glimmer of hope as they look at the direction of the burning forest. It seems that he feels sorry for the other world and it’s painful for him just to look at it. But somehow, I can tell by the tears in his eyes that he’s not only grieving for the other world but of his own, too.
Maybe one of the worlds is real while the other is just a faint memory; maybe one is the past while one is the present. To find out, I’ll have to tear up a corner of truth (which is what the cover is suggesting) and go ahead to read chapter one.

Chapter Two:
Though Jonas had only become a Five the year that they acquired Lily and learned her name, he remembered the excitement, the conversations at home, wondering about her: how she would look, who she would be, how she would fit into their established family unit.( These memories are sweet and full of love. It shows the great love for his sister in Jonas’s heart.)
The Receiver was the most important Elder. ( I am wondering what’s the relation between the ‘receiver’ and the ‘give’.)
His father smiled. (This shows the memory had brought Jonas’s father great happiness.)
Every day, at the Nurturing Center, I play ounce-on-the-knee, and peek-a-boo, and hug-the-teddy.(This sentence makes me laugh, it also shows Jonas’s dad’s sense of humor.)
Though he had been reassured by the talk with his parents, he hadn't the slightest idea what Assignment the Elders would be selecting for his future, or how he might feel about it when the day came.( This let me know that Jonas was worried about his ceremony.)
作者: zhouqing 时间: 2013-7-3 11:20
Chapter Three:
Depth, he decided; as if one were looking into the clear water of the river, down to the bosom, where things might lurk which hadn't been discovered yet.(This let me know that both the child and Jonas are somehow special.)
It had changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere. The same nondescript shade, about the same shade as his own tunic.( I thank this is the beginning to show that Jonas had special powers.)
The evening proceeded as all evenings did in the family unit, in the dwelling, in the community: quiet, reflective, a time for renewal and preparation for the day to come. It was different only in the addition to it of the new child with his pale, solemn, knowing eyes. ( This shows that this community is a warm, safe and well-mannered place. I think this new child will change a lot in the rest of the books.)

Chapter Four:
Jonas rode at a leisurely pace, glancing at the bikeports beside the buildings to see if he could spot Asher’s. He didn’t often do at his volunteer hours with his friend because he frequently fooled around and made serious work a little difficult. But now, with Twelve coming so soon and the volunteer hours ending, it didn’t seem to matter.
(Jonas sometimes abandon his friend Asher because he is a little sluggish, but he now realized that he and Asher may part from the ceremony, and he begin to treasure the friendship between he and Asher, he is not going to abandon him now.)
But he finally found Asher’s bicycle--leaning, as usual, instead of upright in its port, as it should have been--at the House of the Old.
(Jonas really knows Asher, though he wished Asher would be at other places, but his potential consciousness, as forever, knows where Asher will be.)
The Old were sitting quietly, some visiting and talking with one another, others doing handwork and simple crafts. A few were asleep.
(The House of the Old was quite quiet, the Old’s life quite boring, and maybe after the young and passionate life, they need peace and quiet.)
Each room was comfortably furnished, the floors covered with thick carpeting. It was a serene and slow-paced place, unlike the busy center of manufacture and distribution where the daily work of community occurred.
(The community is kind to the Old, to those which had gave there lives to devote the community, the people in the community are fair and square.)

He remembered that there was a reference to the Stirrings in the Book of Rules, though he didn’t remember what it said. And now and then Speaker mentioned it. ATTENTION. A REMINDER THAT STIRRING MUST BE REPORTED IN ORDER FOR TREATMENT TO TAKE PLACE.
(Though I do not know what is Stirring, but I think in this community, everything has been thought of, management is quite in place)

Chapter Six:
The entire community attend the Ceremony each year. For the parents, it means two days’ holiday from work; they sat together in the huge hall. Children sat with there group until they went, one by one, to the stage.
(The whole community take the Ceremony seriously, everybody will attend the Ceremony, no one in the community will be outside the hall)
Even Jonas, though he didn’t hover over the little one the way Lily and his father did, was glad that Gabe had not been released.
(Jonas’s family like the little Gabe very much, none of them want the little thing to be released)
“I heard about a guy who was absolutely certain he was going to be assigned Engineer,”Asher murmured as they ate,”and instead they gave him Sanitation Laborer. He went out the next day, jumped into the river, swam across, and joined the next community he came to. Nobody ever saw him again.”
Jonas laughed.”Somebody made that story up, Ash,” he said. “My father said he heard that story when he was twelve.”
But Asher wasn’t reassured. He was eyeing the river where it was visible behind the Auditorium.”I can’t even swim very well,” he said. “My swimming instructor said I don’t have the right boyishness or something.”
(All Elevens are nervous about the coming Ceremony of Twelve, they all worry what if the Assignment will not be what they want to be, what will they do, nothing comforts them, they just have to face it)
Jonas shrugged. It didn’t worry him. How could someone not fit in? The community was so meticulously ordered, the choice so carefully made.
(Jonas has confidence in his community, in his community’s Elders, he believes everyone can fit in this community, no one will fail)
He was certain that his Assignment, whatever it to be, and Asher’s, too, would be the right one for them.
(Jonas has the confidence of the Elder’s observation ability and their ability of judgment, he belive it will fit everybody)

She was a good student, quiet and polite, but she had a sense of fun as well ( Fiona had a sense of humor just like Asher, which must be the reason why they become good friends.)
The Old were sitting quietly, some visiting and talking with one another, others doing handwork and simple crafts. A few were asleep. (This shows the peace between the Old.)
It was a serene and slow-paced place, unlike the busy centers of manufacture and distribution where the daily work of the community occurred . ( This shows the difference between the old and the rest of the community.)
The tub would be filled in a minute and the water flow would stop automatically. (This let me know that this community’s technology is greater than ours.)
He helped the woman from the chair, led her to the tub, removed her robe, and steadied her with his hand on her arm as she stepped in and lowered herself. She leaned back and sighed with pleasure, her head on a soft cushioned headrest
(This part describes how Jonas give Larissa her shower. This simple words makes the sense looks lively.)
The relaxed, peaceful smile on the woman's face reminded him of Gabriel being bathed. (In some ways old people and new born babies are the same.)

Chapter Five:
So he forced himself to relate the part that made him uneasy.(This show that this dream is going to be embarrassing.)
She glanced at Father.(That is something about –Jonas’s dream that made his mother worried.)
He remembered that upon waking, he had wanted to feel the Stirrings again.(Jonas forgot about the embarrassing moment and felt proudly because of the pills that made him think he is somehow grown up.)
the dream slipped away from his thoughts. Very briefly, a little guiltily, he cried co grasp it back. But the feelings had disappeared.(The sentence let me knew that this was that the pills do. I think it will be mentioned in the rest of the book.)

The front-buttoned jacket was the first sign of independence, the first very visible symbol of growing up. The bicycle, at Nine, would be the powerful emblem of moving gradually out into the community, away from the protective family unit.(Every thing from the ceremony had it’s own meaning.)
But once a year, they all smiled indulgently at the commotion from the little ones waiting to receive their names and families.(It shows the love and hope from the community members to the babies.)
The entire community had performed the Ceremony of Loss together, murmuring the name Caleb throughout an entire day,(The community loved every member of it.)
less and less frequently, softer in volume, is the long and somber day went on, so that the little Four seemed to fade away gradually from everyone's consciousness.(Time can let everyone forget everything.)

He paid strict attention as his friend went to the stage and stood self-consciously beside the Chief Elder.(The friendship between Jonas and Asher was really strong.)
Asher grinned and scratched one leg with the other foot.(It shows again that Asher had a sense of humor.)
Asher whimpered, cringed, and corrected himself instantly. "Snack," he whispered.(This part made me laugh.)
They were fingering them as they sat,(All the new twelve were nervous and excited about the training.)
He hunched his shoulders and tried to make himself smaller in the seat.(It shows the embarrassment Jonas felt.)

Then he heard the gasp -- the sudden intake of breath, drawn sharply in astonishment, by each of the seated citizens. He saw their faces; the eyes widened in awe(This description shows that the people was really surprised. This also let me know that the Receiver of Memory is an important job.)
and the Chief Elder's eves were now on one who sat in the midst but seemed oddly separate from them. It was a man Jonas had never noticed before, a bearded man with pale eyes. He was watching Jonas intently.(These let me know the man is the Receiver of Memory.)
He is to be alone, apart, while he is prepared by the current Receiver for the job which is the most honored in our community."(Now I know the Receiver of Memory was really special.)

chapter 1
The story started with word-choosing. We realize that Jonus doesn’t live in a world that we are familiar with. Jonus’s deliberate choosing of a word to describe his feelings is a bit odd. We rarely care so much to be careful with our using of language. In fact, we often exaggerate. And then, December. What’s so special about December? A coming new year? Is he worrying that he won’t get a present on Christmas because he was naughty? But one doesn’t connect Christmas with “frightened”. But the author doesn’t write about December, instead explaining about the word “frightened”. So, Jonus had seen a plane fly over the “community” and had been frightened. But why? Planes flying over head aren’t so unusual in our daily life. And then, there were the ‘speakers” saying that the pilot would be “released”. Why would there be speakers informing and soothing people in the middle of the street? And the word “released” gives us a foreboding feeling. Jonus’s chain of thoughts then goes on to inform us of his friend, Asher, who is usually late for school, and one of the incidents of Asher’s language mistakes. Then, when Jonus got home, there were the sharing of feelings, and the not knowing about animals. We are even more convinced that this world is different. Then, the author reveals a little about December. And now, we are left with a new question: What is “The Ceremony of Twelve”?
作者: 小荷听雨 时间: 2013-7-11 22:59
chapter 2
Each December was special, in the community. There were ceremonies for the children according to their ages. The “newchildren” were then given to certain family units. There were also the ceremonies of Twos and Threes and Fours and all of the age groups of children until the Twelves. Jonus’s father told about his ceremony of twelve to ease Jonus’s nervousness. The paragraphs are made up of their conversation and Jonus’s thoughts. Then when Jonus was reassured, Lilly came in, asking for her comfort object. I then learn that there weren’t animals in the community, and the people don’t even know that there are animals in the world----they think that they are imaginary things.
Also, I still am concerned about Jonus’s assignment. Since he doesn’t have a clear aptitude, I get the feeling that it would be most unusual indeed. I am not, however, really interested in the newchild called Gabriel. But, as I’ve already read the whole book, I later realize that Gabe plays a vital part in the story.
Ps: I found a mistake in the book concerning Gabe and Jonus. And it’s pretty important.

The fabrics on the upholstered chairs and sofa were slightly thicker and more luxurious; the table legs were not straight like chose at home, but slender and curved, with a small carved decoration at the foot. (All these details of the furniture make me know that the Receiver of Memory was different and more important than other people.)
The flesh around them was darkened into shadowed circles.(This little detail shows the man’s tiredness and his will to let Jonas be the next Receiver of Memory.)
Jonas went on, uncomfortably aware that he might be interrupting again,(Because of the education of being polite, Jonas hadn’t get used to the job.)
He rested for a moment, breathing deeply. "I am so weighted with them,'' he said. (This job was hard.)
"I am going to transmit the memory of snow," the old man said, and placed his hands on Jonas’s bare back.(I think the next part will be exciting and fascinating to the reader and Jonas.)

Chapter Eleven:
At the same instant, breathing in, he felt the air change, and his very breath was cold. He licked his lips, and in doing so, his tongue touched the suddenly chilled air.(The writer wrote this part with all the details because Jonas had this feeling for the first time and other members in the community didn’t have it.)
The touch of the man's hands seemed to have disappeared.(It’s sort of magical.)
Comprehending all of those things as he sped downward, he was free to enjoy the breathless glee that overwhelmed him: the speed, the clear cold air, the total silence, the feeling of balance and excitement and peace.(All these things were new to Jonas and he was really happy to feel them and experience them.)
Snow made growing food difficult, limited the agricultural periods. And unpredictable weather made transportation almost impossible at rimes.(I think this was the reason why the bad weather has disappeared and the community was very peaceful.)
His skin began to sting. Restlessly he moved one arm, bending it, and felt a sharp pain in the crease of his inner arm at the elbow.(Jonas was going to fell the painful part of the training.)
"Call me The Giver,'' he told Jonas.(Now I know the whole name of the title---the Giver of Memory.)
作者: zhouqing 时间: 2013-7-15 11:02
Chapter 12:
Jonas simply smiled and nodded, not ready to lie, not willing to tell the truth.(Although Jonas had to follow the rules, he was still feeling uncomfortable about the rules.)
All of them talked at once, interrupting each other, hastily making the required apology for interrupting, then forgetting again in the excitement of describing the new experiences.(Everyone was really excited, but unfortunately Jonas couldn’t share his wonderful feelings.)
He was already seated beside the bed, and he seemed more energetic today, slightly renewed, and glad to see Jonas.(Because of the memory the Giver had given to Jonas, he felt much better, and had a better attitude.)
But it didn't come.(Something was going to happen.)
Jonas grinned with delight, and blew his own steamy breath into view.(The memory brought Jonas comforting memory.)
probably when you saw the faces take on color it wasn't as deep or vibrant as the apple, or your friend's hair.(Now I know all the reason for the strange things Jonas had seen.)
"We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others."( I was first confused when I realized the people in the book cn’t see any color, now I know the reason.)

chapter 3
Father had brought Gabe home, and here is the mistake. Lilly had squealed that the newborn had different eyes, just like Jonas. Their eyes were pale. Lighter than the others’ eyes. When we say pale and light, we’re referring to color. And yet, the author later tell us that the world of the community doesn’t have colors. So, there’s a kind of mistake here. And since Jonas’s lighter colored eyes gives us a hint of his assignment’s specialness, and it is also part of the reason why Jonas liked Gabe so much, this mistake is pretty big! (Just like the glass shoe that didn’t turn back in Cinderella).
Jonas then started to remember one of his awkward incidents. The time when he and Asher had been playing Catch with an apple, and Jonas had seen something change, within the apple. Not its size, not its shape. But a quality, one that Jonas couldn’t describe and had never seen before, changed within the apple. We know, or rather, we can guess, that Jonas had seen color for the first time. And Jonas had taken the apple home that day, in spite of the rules, to examine it. But he never found anything unusual.
At the end of the paragraph, the author had, once again, pointed out the newchild’s eyes, and the look of depth they gave him.

Chapter 13:
There would be a glimpse of green -- the landscaped lawn around the Central Plaza; a bush on the riverbank. The bright orange of pumpkins being trucked in from the agricultural fields beyond the community boundary -- seen in an instant, the flash of brilliant color, but gone again, returning to their flat and hueless shade.(Jonas’s life became more colorful and beautiful.)
"they chose their own job??"(This kind of thing is regular in our life.)
the sharp crack of weapons – he perceived the word guns -- and then shouts, and an immense crashing thud as something fell, tearing branches from the trees.(The Giver had given Jonas a really, really bad memory---killing.)
Jonas had never heard such a sound. It was a sound of rage and grief and it seemed never to end.(Jonas was surprised of all the feelings the elephants had expressed.)
But he read the titles here and there, and knew that they contained all of the knowledge of centuries, and that one day they would belong to him.(Jonas was starting to look forward to the job.)
"So there will be a whole part of your life which you won't be able to share with a family. It's hard, Jonas. It was hard for me.(Because the job was so special, the rules were strong and hard. I can’t think what I will do if I can’t share with my family.)
Life here is so orderly, so predictable -- so painless.(Now I am thinking this kind of life is boring.)
He paused, and seemed to be struggling with the concept.(The memory was hard and painful to remember.)
Jonas knew, on days when he arrived to find The Giver hunched over, rocking his body slightly back and forth, his
face pale, that he would be sent away.(Something was wrong with the Giver.)
The Giver nodded. "Lie down," he said. "It's time, I suppose. I can't shield you forever. You'll have to take it all on eventually.(I think something painful will happen to Jonas.)

Chapter 14:
The sled moved forward, and Jonas grinned with delight, looking forward to the breathtaking slide down through the invigorating air.(The word ‘look forward’ told me this trip was not going to the same as before.)
It was as if a hatchet lay lodged in his leg, slicing through each nerve with a hot blade.(This sentence mode the pain Jonas felt more easy to understand.)
No medication for anything related to his training. And no discussion of his training(We can see why the training was so hard now.)
"And the strongest memory that came was hunger. It came from many generations back. Centuries back. The population had gotten so big that hunger was everywhere. Excruciating hunger and starvation. It was followed by warfare."(This tells us that the memory from the generations before was important to the community.)
"Bur then everyone would be burdened and pained. They don't want that. And that's the real reason The Receiver is so vital to them, and so honored.(It is a little unfair to the Receive of Memory.)
She was kneeling beside the crib, making funny faces at the little one, who was smiling back at her.(All the family members love the new member of their family unit.)
The new child was on his stomach, his arms relaxed beside his head, his eyes closed, and his breathing regular and un- disturbed. Finally Jonas slept too.(This description made us see a cute and peaceful baby, sleeping, undisturbed.)
He was not aware of giving the memory; but suddenly he realized that it was becoming dimmer, that it was sliding through his hand into the being of the new child.(I think Gabriel (or all babies) can receive memories easily.)

Chapter 15:
A wild-eyed horse, in bridle tom and dangling, trotted frantically through the mounds of men, tossing its head, whinnying in panic. It stumbled, finally. then fell, and did not rise.(A simple description of a horse could show how bad the scene was.)
A wild-eyed horse, in bridle tom and dangling, trotted frantically through the mounds of men, tossing its head, whinnying in panic. It stumbled, finally. then fell, and did not rise.(The combine of all those color together, made the scene lively and realistic.)
Finally, when the container was open, he extended his arm slowly across the blood-soaked earth, inch by inch, and held it to the lips of the boy. Water trickled into the imploring mouth and down the grimy chin.(The time was hard, but there was still kindness in everyone’s heart.)
The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. "Forgive me," he said.(The giver felt guilty because he had given Jonas such painful memory.)

chapter 4
The fourth chapter is...well...odd. It has pointed out again, that there were unusual rules about speaking in the community. Bragging isn’t too polite, but one usually uses it as a kind of joke too.
The chapter is mainly about Jonas doing his volunteer hours at the House of the Old. It wasn’t just any volunteer in the House of the Old either----this time he was to help in the bathing room. He bathed Larissa, and I was a little surprised that they trusted other people to bath them. It gave me another hint about organized life in the community.
As Jonas bathed Larissa, she told him about Roberto and Edna’s release. Other from the joke, I also learned a bit more about release: that there’s a releasing room and that there’s a ceremony of release. I am also hooked on to a question: What on earth is “release”?

Chapter 16:
Jones did not want to go back. He didn’t want the memories, didn't want the honor, didn't want the wisdom, didn't want the pain.(Jonas was starting to dislike the training because of the pain.)
Although he had through the memories learned about the pain of loss and loneliness, now he gained, too, an understanding of solitude and its joy.(When you felt something sad, you will feel something happy.)
There were cries of delight. They hugged one another.(This must be Christmas. And the joy and hopes must be the Giver’s favorite.)
"As long as they're still working and contributing to the community, they'll go and live with the other Child- less Adults. And they won't be part of my life anymore.(Because of the strict rules of the community, sometimes they could not fell the love of family.)
Jonas repeated it. "Love." It was a word and concept new to him.(This word is around us in our times right now. Yet it became a new and strange thing to Jonas.)
Jonas stared at them. Meaningless? Life had never before felt anything as meaningful as the memory.(I was a little stunned that the parents think the word of ‘love’ was meaningless.)
You could ask, 'Do you enjoy me?" (This question has no feelings inside, it’s like the parents didn’t have the feelings as one as ours to us.)
But when he was taken away, he stopped sleeping again, and cried in the night.(All those things happened because of the happy memory Jonas had given Garibel.)
Something within him, something that had grown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away.(To me, this was a sign of Jonas growing up.)

Chapter 17:
Now he could see all of the colors; and he could keep them, too, so that the trees and grass and bushes stayed green in his vision. Gabriel's rosy cheeks stayed pink, even when he slept. And apples were always, always red.(The memory from the Giver brought Jonas a brand new world.)
Now he had, in the memories, experienced injustice and cruelty, and he had reacted with rage that welled up so passionately inside him that the thought of discussing it calmly at the evening meal was unthinkable.(Now I realized that anger and impatience has a lot of differences. And the members of the community’s feelings are plain and unchangeable.)
But now Jonas had experienced real sadness. He had felt grief. He knew that there was no quick comfort for emotions like those. (It’s like the feelings new people get were fake.)
In his mind, Jonas saw again the face of the boy who had lain dying on a field and had begged him for water. He had a sudden choking feeling, as if it were difficult to breathe.(The children in this time didn’t know the real scene of the real war. They couldn’t imagine the pain, they thought a game of war was fun.)
His child- hood, his friendships, his carefree sense of security -- all of these things seemed to be slipping away. With his new, heightened feelings, he was overwhelmed by sadness at the way the others had laughed and shouted, playing at war.(Because of all the ‘red’ feelings, Jonas’s life was changed a lot.)
It was hard to believe that it was almost December again, that almost a year had passed since he had become a Twelve.( Time past quickly.)
He glanced down, grinning at Gabriel. "Then I wave bye-bye," he said, in the special sweet voice he used when he spoke to the new child. He waved his hand in the familiar gesture.(You have to have lots of love to be a nurturer like Jonas’s father.)

The crowd cheered, as the~ did for you. The new Receiver was puzzled and a little frightened, as you were."(All didn’t change. All the children must have the same feeling because of the special job.)
The Giver hesitated painfully, as if saying the name aloud might be excruciating(The memory gave the Giver treat pain.)
Sometimes I chose one just because I knew it would make her Laugh, and I so treasured the sound of that laughter in this room that had always been so silent.(Being the Receiver of Memory could be lonely, so the laughter of Rosemary mode the Giver felt some company with me and love.)
I was notified by the Speaker that she had gone directly to the Chief Elder and asked to be released." (Rosemary couldn’t stand the pain from the memory anymore.)

For a while they overwhelmed the community. All those feelings! They'd never experienced that before.(I think the people in the book were weak because they didn’t experience the feeling of pain, they couldn’t get stronger from the loss and other feelings.)
Jonas hesitated. He was afraid that his father wouldn't like it, if he watched something so private.(Jonas was still following every rule in the community.)
Jonas recognized a scale; he had seen them before, when he'd been doing volunteer hours at the Nurturing Centers(I think they are picking the one who was heavier to live, because that meant the heavier baby was stronger.)
Jonas's father, wearing his nurturing uniform, entered the room, cradling a tiny new child wrapped in a soft blanket in his arms. A uniformed woman followed through the door, carrying a second new child wrapped in a similar blanket.(I think the rule of releasing one of the twins was ridiculous cruel and unfair.)
The Giver commanded in a strange voice.(Why was the Giver a strange voice?)
As he continued to watch, the new child, no longer crying, moved his arms and legs in a jerking motion. Then he went limp. He head fell to the side, his eyes half open. Then he was still.(The little baby was now dead.)
With an odd, shocked feeling, Jonas recognized the gestures and posture and expression. They were familiar. He had seen
them before. But he couldn't remember where.(The child’ death night brought Jonas a new feeling, horror.)
"Then she did so. I didn't watch. I looked away."(The love in the Giver’s heart for Rosemary made he couldn’t see it anymore.)
Jonas felt a ripping sensation inside himself, the feeling of terrible pain clawing in way forward to emerge in a cry.(Many things, like the feeling for his father ,was changing in Jonas’s heart.)

"I will take care of that, sir. I will take care of that, sir, Jonas mimicked in a cruel, sarcastic voice. "I will do whatever you like. sir. I will kill people, sir. Old people;" Small newborn people! I’d be happy to kill them, sir. Thank you for your instructions, sir. How may I help you. He couldn't seem to stop.(I think Jonas was coming to the edge of his mind.)
Feelings ace not part of the Life she's learned."(I felt pity for Fiona and other members of the community.)
"I've started to share them with you," Jonas said, trying to cheer him.(Jonas had realized his mistake and started to be cheerful again.)
"So if you escape, once you are gone -- and, Jonas, you know that you can never return -- "(I think they were planning to let Jonas leave and make the memories come back to all the people.)
"No. I have to stay here," The Giver said firmly.(I think the Giver still loved the community.)
Jonas went home the next morning, cheerfully greeted his parents, and lied easily about what a busy, pleasant night he had had.(Jonas wasn’t miserable anymore and felt much more cheerful because of their plan.)
His patents would be irritated but not alarmed. They would think him inconsiderate and they would plan to chastise him, later.(Because the people in the book didn’t have any feelings, what would they do was totally obvious.)
Their attention would Nm to the overwhelming task of bearing the memories themselves. The Giver would help them.(I think it’s a good for them to have the memory back, Then they would be smarter and stronger.)
"Her name was Rosemary," The Giver said.(This stunned me. And I know the Giver wanted to be released like her daughter.)

The family unit was eating together as always: Lily chattering away, Mother and Father making their customary comments (and Lies, Jonas knew) about the day.(I seemed like there were love between each member of the family, but actually there wasn’t any love at all.)
"It's bye-bye to you, Gabe, in the morning," Father had said, in his sweet, sing-song voice.(I am disgusted of Jonas’s father’s fake behavior. He was going to kill a baby and had no sadness about it .)
Gabe snuggled cheerfully as if it were a wrestling game, the kind they had played back in the dwelling, with tickles and laughter.(Gabriel was such a cute and cheerful baby. Jonas’s father was going go kill him. It is lucky that Jonas had saved him.)
Together they became cold; and when the planes were gone, they would shiver, holding each other, until sleep came again.(Memories and feelings could do co much.)

Chapter 22:
The road was narrower, and bumpy, apparently no longer tended by toad crews. It was harder, suddenly, to balance on the bike, as the front wheel wobbled over stones and ruts.(It was harder and harder to keep escaping.)
During his twelve years in the community, he had never felt such simple moments of exquisite happiness.(This escape made Jonas actually experienced all the things he had in his memories.)
Then, when he had had a choice, he had made the wrong one: the choice to leave. And now he was starving.(Jonas was feeling miserable and started to regret about this escape.)
His sprained ankle throbbed as he forced the pedal downward in an effort that was almost beyond him.(Although it was hard, Jonas wasn’t going to give up.)
He wept because he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel. He no longer cared about himself.(Jonas had strong love for Gabriel.)
作者: zhouqing 时间: 2013-7-26 08:37
Chapter 23:
He saw nothing ahead except the endless ribbon of road unfolding in twisting narrow curves. He heard no sound ahead.(The escape was becoming more and more difficult.)
But he had come this far. He must try to go on.(Jonas wasn’t going to give up hope.)
His consciousness grasped at a wisp of another warm memory, and tried desperately to hold it there, to enlarge it, and pass it into Gabriel. His spirits and strength lifted with the momentary warmth and he stood.(Jonas was using his memory, his love for Garbiel, his hope to encourage himself not to give up and keep on trying and going.)
Memories of joy flooded through him suddenly. He reached the place where the hill crested and he could feel the ground under his snow-covered feet become level. It would not be uphill anymore.(The memory of happiness, love, friendship helped Jonas to go through the difficulties.)
But somewhere ahead, through the blinding storm, he knew there was warmth and light.(Jonas was filled with hope and will never give up.)

chapter 5
Here it is, another unusual thing about our main character. He rarely dreamed. The paragraph is about a morning ritual called dream-telling. Apparently, everybody in the community has to tell others about their dreams.
As we know, Jonas rarely dreamed. But this time, he had a dream that he could remember, very vividly. And it’s also odd. He didn’t pay much attention to his sister’s dream-telling, he was thinking of his own. It troubled him. And that sentence caught my attention immediately. Something odd happened in Jonas’s dream, and it’s important. I later learned that Jonas’s dream was about his first “stirrings”. I couldn’t understand the dream when I read the story the first time, when I was eleven, but now I do, and it’s kind of embarrassing. And, to be honest, my heart jumped when Jonas said about the wanting in his dream.
I then find out that the “stirrings” had to be treated, in the community----with a little pill that they took all of their adult lives. It seamed much reassuring, but it also seemed un-natural.
At the end, when the pill did it’s work, the word “slip” was used brilliantly, especially the part when the author compared the way when the dwelling had slipped behind Jonas and the feelings slipping from his mind.
作者: 恶魔的尾巴 时间: 2013-7-30 23:11
Chapter 6
The ceremonies have started. All of the citizens in the community went to the Auditorium to take part of it. The ceremonies of the age groups were described, and the changes’ symbolism told.
For instance, the ones were named and assigned to their family units; the fours wore jackets that buttoned down the back, to help them learn interdependence. The sevens wore ones that button down the front, a sign of independence. The eights receive permission to do volunteer hours, and the nines get their own bikes.
Then the anxious wait for the ceremony of Twelve. The story of the release of Rosa was first known by Jonas, from Asher. It was a pretty hooking chapter, not because it’s exciting, but because that it’s going to be exciting when we find out what Jonas’s assignment would be.

Chapter 7
This paragraph started with the explanation of the numbers in age group. Every child has a number, in the order when they were born. Jonas is Nineteen.
On the ceremony, the Chief Elder told about Asher’s “silence” when he was a three. Then, Jonas’s turn came.
I held my breath along with him.
Then, the word “twenty”. I was as stunned as our main character! I remembered well the Jonas was Nineteen. But I was excited too. The moment had come when the unusual things start to happen!
When the others in Jonas’s age group “glance at him then avert their eyes, embarrassed”, I was feeling just as if I was in Jonas’s shoes. I easily get bashful and nervous in public things. It seems that Jonas isn’t as shy, but he’s in a pretty awkward situation too. He tried to disappear in his seat, to be smaller and attract less attention.
作者: 恶魔的尾巴 时间: 2013-8-5 13:48
Chapter 8
Jonas was more nervous than he had ever been before. Nobody else was singled out, whilst only he was. The community was confused, there were whispers, everybody was ill at ease. At last, when the Chief Elder apologized to the whole community, they calmed down a little, but they were still very silent.
When the Chief Elder said that Jonas was selected, all the people gasped, and Jonas was even more bewildered. Then the Chief Elder told him about the training of the Reciever and Jonas got more and more “unbrave” by the minute when he heard about the separateness and the loneliness acquired. Especially when he heard about the “Capacity of Seeing Beyond”.
But, at that moment, the strange apple incident cut in, and all the faces of the people seemed red to Jonas just for an instant.
And just because of that strange incident, Jonas gained a little confidence. He, for the first time, believed that maybe, just maybe, he really had enough courage, to except the honor.
