芭比诞生于二战后的美国。当时美泰公司创办人露丝·汉德勒见女儿喜欢玩当时流行的纸娃娃，兴致盎然地帮它们换衣服、换皮包，便想到应该设计一款立体娃娃。而一次在德国度假时，露丝无意间发现了身高11.5寸，三围39-18-33的德国娃娃“莉莉”。正是这个娃娃激发了露丝的灵感，回到美国后，露丝立刻对莉莉的形象加以改造，让她看上去像玛丽莲·梦露一般地性感迷人。1959年3月9日，世界上第一个金发美女娃娃正式问世，露丝用小女儿芭芭拉的呢称给她命名，从此这位金发美女就叫做“芭比”。
　　42年来，芭比始终保持着青春、亮丽的形象，曲线玲珑、光彩照人。美泰公司平均每年要推出90组芭比系列娃娃，为使芭比更加人性化，美泰专门为她设计了朋友、家人，还有一个名叫肯尼的男友；芭比从事的职业也各种各样，她当过明星、教师、工程师、甚至兽医；而最让孩子们着迷的是，芭比有数不清的漂亮衣服。据统计，自问世以来，芭比和她的朋友们一共穿过近10亿件衣服，芭比以其迷人的形象征服了全世界。
