Founded in 1821, Amherst is a baccalaureate college that grants degrees in over 30 concentrations, ranging from American studies to women's and gender studies. The college also has agreements with five area colleges, including the University of Massachusetts, which allow students to take for-credit classes that may not be available at this smaller school. On campus, there are more than 100 student organizations, and the library houses more than one million publications.

Entrance to this research college is highly selective, and former students and faculty include Nobel laureates and National Medal of Science recipients. At this small college, students can earn undergraduate or graduate degrees in areas such as geological and planetary sciences, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, engineering, physics, mathematics and astronomy. There are over 75 on-campus research centers, as well as off-campus facilities, such as the W.M. Keck Observatory in Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
