Amherst College in MassachusettsIn 2010, this small college was ranked second among top liberal arts universities in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Founded in 1821, Amherst is a baccalaureate college that grants degrees in over 30 concentrations, ranging from American studies to women's and gender studies. The college also has agreements with five area colleges, including the University of Massachusetts, which allow students to take for-credit classes that may not be available at this smaller school. On campus, there are more than 100 student organizations, and the library houses more than one million publications.

There are over 75 on-campus research centers, as well as off-campus facilities, such as the W.M. Keck Observatory in Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Each year, the college is granted over a quarter-of-a-million dollars in funding to advance scientific and technological research.
