3月25日，雅典奥运圣火将在现代奥林匹克运动的发源地奥林匹亚引燃，拉开雅典奥运会火炬接力的序幕。当美国亚特兰大从雅典手中夺走1996年现代奥运会100年的举办权后，希腊人再接再厉，一举夺得了2004年在雅典的主办权。在108年之后的今天，希腊人实现了让奥运会重返故乡的梦想。这是于1896年在希腊首都雅典大理石运动场举行的第一届奥运会盛况。当时有13个国家的300多名选手参赛。

这是1896年德国运动员魏因格特纳在雅典奥运会吊环比赛中。他在本届奥运会体操比赛中获得三块奖牌：单杠比赛金牌，鞍马比赛银牌，吊环比赛铜牌。

1896年来自希腊山区的牧羊人斯皮里东·鲁易斯成为奥运史上第一个马拉松冠军。第一届奥运会的马拉松跑是按照古代希腊士兵从马拉松跑至雅典报捷的路线进行的。

这是1936年柏林奥运会期间举行的奥林匹克火炬接力跑。自1936年第十一届柏林奥运会开始，大会期间主体育场自始至终燃烧着奥林匹克圣火。火种取自希腊的古奥运发祥地奥林匹亚，由聚光镜点燃火炬，然后采取接力方式传到主办国。目前，点燃奥林匹克火焰是每届奥运会开幕式不可缺少的仪式之一。
